Riyad Mahrez Statement

Riyad Mahrez has spoken out for the first time since his failed deadline day move to Manchester City

In a statement the Leicester Mercury reported, Mahrez said the Foxes had "always been aware" of his whereabouts.

He said that "many people claiming to be my friend" had "spoken about me and things they know nothing about".

He added: "Off the back of that many people and journalists have made assumptions without properly checking the story, so I would like to clarify that all those so-called assumptions of why I was absent are completely untrue.

"I have been a part of the Leicester City team that has achieved much success including promotion to the Premier League and being Champions of the League.

"My goals have always been the same and I have always given my full 100% when I play for the club the fans and my team-mates.

"Those goals remain the same today and in the future and when I am asked to be a part of the Leicester team, rest assured I will continue to give my all."

I actually can understand it from all of the perspectives really:

Mahrez is frustrated because he was told he could leave last summer if we got a good bid. We didn’t. Mahrez felt like a diick sitting an airport and realised he probably wasn’t as amazing as his agent had hyped up. We get a deal in the Christmas window which I can think we probably would have accepted in the summer so Mahrez is thinking ‘hold on a minute, I’ve tried my hardest to knuckle down this season and play and then you still don’t sell me despite an agreement with the owner’

I can understand it from the clubs perspective. Firstly we have been stung by last minute deals, so why should we be persuaded into it just because it’s one of the big clubs (as a slight aside, Paul Merson said yesterday we should have sold him for £65m and have been in ‘big trouble’ since he stopped training). In addition, we see other players going for inflated fees, have no need for 50+m with hours to spare in the transfer window and have made literally 100s of millions of pounds anyway. If you want Mahrez, make a bid at the start of the window rather than like you are playing champ man and get a last minute injury.

I get it from Manchester City’s and other clubs perspectives. Unlike lazy journalists, opposition fans and embarrassing ‘analysts’ like Jermaine Jenas (who said Mahrez was ‘absolutely on fire’ after a game recently where he scored and did almost literally nothing else in the match); other clubs send scouts and properly analyse potential players. Mahrez has been ‘okay’ this season on the whole with a few highlights of brilliance reminiscent of the title winning season. Last season he was generally poor. So that is one fantastic season, a poor one and a decentish half of one. Although this goes against the grain of general opinion from Leicester fans, I think Man City’s bid was about right.

I even understand Mahrez being disappointed.

But what I cannot agree with; what is embarrassing and bordering on pathetic, is his decision to just not turn up to training. He desperately needs to get a new agent, as the one he has is offering terrible advice.

Mahrez needs to get his head down, hope he is welcomed back by the players, because they will feel really let down, hope potential suitors aren’t put off and try to get in the team and play well consIstently and to his potential for the remainder of the season. He is one of a few hundred players each season (maybe less) who can play to the potential that he has at this level. He is playing for a premier league club, has won the premier league, won awards and played in the champions league....this is all after kicking around a football in the lower echelons of France.

Stop believing in your agents and lazy pundits opinions that you are already this complete, world class player, Have some perspective, humility and integrity, get back to the form you showed two years ago and the ‘big’ clubs will bid a world class amount for a world class player and you will get your dream move. Because at the minute Riyad, you aren’t even the best performing player in our team, let alone the Premier League or even further a field.

we will have to wait for the book to come out to find out what really happen. I belive the club new where he was from day one and kept everything internal including saying he won't train on friday or play on today.

Do you know Man city have never paid more than £55 million for a player i believe? up till now.

I sit next to people who were forever moaning about Andy King for his performances and showing him a total lack of respect. But can you imagine Kingy spitting his dummy out and going AWOL? I don't think so. He is a consummate professional. I may be an old git, but I hate how money has entered our game. Years ago I don't think a talented player like Mahrez would have ended up in a situation like this.
Rant over. Allez le bleu.

KP can you image Man city ever coming in for Andy King or Andy king being able to do anything that Marhez can do your not comparing apples and apples and i bet i'm an older git than you perhaps

None of us know anything really, can leave if a good bid comes in - what is a good bid then?
The only thing we do know is that Mahrez signed a contract until the summer of 2020 I am pretty sure that that contract would say that you turn up for training when required.
He didn't -

Just as a mater of interest

If a player has a clause of £55million
What exactly does that do

It allows a club to offer a minimum bid to activate the clause?
It allows that club to talk to the player re wages ect?

Does it force the holding club to sell the player even under contract ?

Yes to all questions

Man you forgot to add that the club new by offering him said contract that they would of got more money for him it cuts both ways oh and if the club had enough of him they would of sold him at drop of a hat.

Yes I understand that Nev, I'm just making the point that I appreciate qualities in a player such as old-fashioned loyalty, professionalism, model pro etc- a different thing to having talent. BTW I go back to round about Sept 1967! Once saw us beat Man Utd with Law, Charlton and Best in the side, so I can die happy.
