Kasper Schmeichel

Let’s talk about Kasper. I’ll be honest I’ve been a fan for a number of seasons. I think in general he’s a good shot stopper, excellent at one on ones and tends to make up for his weaknesses with his leadership in the dressing room. However I’ve had niggling doubts for the last 2 years over constant mistakes

However I have to say yesterday was the final straw for me. That was an utterly hopeless goalkeeping display that wasn’t worthy of any level of football. Is it me or are the mistakes piling up and starting to cost us goals?

He can’t handle a ball into the box. He doesn’t look at ease co-ordinating with defenders on set pieces. His distribution seems to be getting worse - which was always a strong point. He seems to let in shots which look like they could be saved now - intact I think Jakupovic would do a better job. A far better job.

Is it time to look for a new no.1 in the summer?

I only seen the goals again did watch match in a bar in Spain and spent most of time hiding away from the Man City fans. But looking at the goals i agree it was not on of Maguire's better shows.

trying to find anything to defend about Kaspers performance shows the faith and pride supporters had in him. It it had been Hamer or Slim or Marhez or Amartey in goal, the calls would have gone out for them to never play for us again.

This he needs Huge and Morgan in front over to cover his weakness is laughable it only worked in the winning season when they where allowed to all in wrestle to stop them heading past the static keeper.

This has been coming for a while i was really please with the efforts he had made but even now the shot stopping and distribution,he key skills have departed.

Surely they must of practiced against the angles passes fro DB into the box why did he not dive forward for it.

Shot in off his shoulder eyes shut, passes out to a Mank how can that be Puels fault TB?

Anyway he won't play on Friday and if who ever goes in gets a clean sheet might get the next PL start but don't hold your breath.

Final he would not of helped Saturday but Amarety plays clean sheets Amarety does not play no clean sheets?

As TB says that must all be down to luck.

This is an excellent thread with some very good arguments that are different to mine that are very compelling.

I agree with most that Kasper hasn’t been up to scratch recently. But to suggest Hamer is a valid replacement is laughable, and Jakupovic has looked good when playing, but must either be the worst player in training ever or has slept with every managers daughter to get isolated like he has.

Puel’s tactics have asked Kasper to play differently. His long hoods are less needed now and he needs to work on his short distribution. When to play what ball. Because this is letting him down.

But I agree with Nev. I think that as soon as we bring Amartey back, everything will be fine 😂😂😂

I wear a coat when I go out in autumn. In autumn the leaves aren’t on the trees anymore. In autumn, It must be that me wearing a coat makes the leaves fall from the trees.

In general, Keepers probably shoulder less of the blame when we lose unless it is a direct mistake from them. Therefore it’s probably fair that, as last line of defence, they take a bit of a bashing when it is a direct mistake.

Kasper deserves critism for that and some general play mistakes.

But let’s not kid ourselves into thinking the reason we lost to Man City is completely down to our goalkeeper.

He does have some areas to improve on or certainly areas where he needs to get back to his best.

Nev, Schmeichel was excellent the two seasons prior to our PL winning season as well.

As I said previously, I am probably a little over critical of him at games, but it’s important to have some perspective, context, reflection and objectivity when not only analysing a player’s performance but putting it into context over a short term stint of good/bad form and medium term reflections.

I was annoyed with him during and after the game, but I do have to step back and think, 3 clean sheets leading up to the Man City match, adapting to different formations/players in front of him and most poignant, in terms of this specific thread and the reactivity to the last game: if he doesn’t make the mistake towards the end of the game, I (and I feel probably most fans) are probably saying he made a few decent to good saves, did exceptionally well when coming out to Sterling and not giving away a penalty, could have done better with distribution at times but on the whole did okay.

I don’t think there has been a build up to this at all. At worst, he’s had a terrible game (although with time to reflect now I’m not sure it was as bad as I or certainly some other posters thought). Does this mean a goalkeeper who has had somewhere at or in between ‘excellent’ to ‘decent’ seasons for the entirety of his time with our club, a goal keeper who has still been decent to good in a high majority of matches this season, a goal keeper who if someone said ‘name a handful of out and out mistakes that lead directly to goals from him?’ would really have me thinking and a goalkeeper who kept 3 out of 5 clean sheets in the lead up to Man City, is suddenly the worst in the top ten PL keepers, one of the worst in the league and deserves dropping?.....no. Being objective (or even subjective thinking about when he can frustrate me with his kicks out of play!).....it’s still no.

What frustrates me more is the ‘champ man’ ‘fast food’ attitude nowadays. Poor game. Drop him. This isn’t a computer game.

But then hey, maybe I’m just being racist either For or against Scandinavians.

I’m loving this thread. Best thread in ages.

I also love the fact that I’m Dunge. I always wanted to be calm, considered and articulate, and now I am.

This dungeon is a bit dark and smelly though. Can I have my 2 up 2 down in Liverpool back please Dunge?

For the avoidance of doubt i never said Hamer should start but i have no problem with Yougat breath starting.

Those who say for two season before the premier league winning he was goos also miss the point he isn't getting better and not in the top eight keepers in the prem maybe top ten but time for a change.

He could go to one of those top clubs that have enquired about him?

Not missing the point that he hasn’t improved from those standards - the point was a riposte to your point that he only had one good season, which simply isn’t true.

But yes, I agree that he hasn’t improved upon three brilliant seasons - hardly an insult though.

I would also, as I have alluded to above, ask for objective evidence or at least some stats to use as support as to why he isn’t top 8 and certainly top 10 and over what period this is being based on ? (

Ps - not sure what this means
