It's better to lose 2-1 and get an away

goal than draw 0-0.

Where does this logic come from? Time and time again I see this. Yesterday on the match thread it popped up. Howson on full time devils thinks so too. It holds no logic.

With a nil nil draw any win in the 2nd leg will take us through. A goalless draw will take us to extra time. If we lost 2-1, any draw will knock us out and any win by one goal after 2-1 will knock us out.

I genuinely don't understand why people say that nonsense.

Yeah it's one of those stupid football sayings that makes no sense.

Apparently the 3 times we've drawn first leg away in the CL, we've progressed every time so there's that I guess.

Don't know about other instances, but you drew at the Bernabéu when you were defending champions in 2000, then we beat you 2-3 in the return at Old Trafford.

So no.

OP

If we go 1-0 up at OT, you could argue there's not much in it between a 0-0 draw and a 2-1 defeat away. Not saying I agree with the statement but neither is it total madness.

What I would say is that 0-0 last night is as good for Sevilla as it is for us. They can go through with a (score) draw whereas we're going to have to win.

Feyenoord, out of interest would you have rather lost 2-1 at the bridge or drew 0-0, as ridiculous as it sounds, you know how much an away goal counts...flipping iniesta
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1-1 is a good result for Barca
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Doesn't really answer the question.

I wish. I'd be a rich man if that were the case. Here's how I see the second leg going:

United start quickly, score an early goal and miss a few chances to get a second. As the game wears on United drop deeper and deeper 'defending' the lead.

In the second half United grab a goal on the break to go 2-0 up and it looks safe.

United drop deep again, Sevilla a score with 15 mins left and a nervous last few minutes ensue.

Last five minutes a defensive mistake leads to a Sevilla chance which De Gea saves.

FT 2-1 when it should have been much easier.

Imagine the following CL format:

- All knockout rounds are single leg

- Home team only qualifies with a win

- Away team qualifies with either a win or a draw

...and, reegardless of the opposition, you had to choose between playing all of your games at home OR all of your games away...

(...and the possibility of personally attending games wasn't a factor)

Which would you choose?

Ftr, I'd choose home advantage.

This is basically the answer in a nutshell.

With a 0-0 draw:

Goalless draw: Extra time
Score draw: Sevilla through
United win: United through
Sevilla win: Sevilla through

For a 2-1 loss:

Goalless draw: Sevilla through
Score draw: Sevilla through
Sevilla win: Sevilla through
United win: United through if not 1-0

Pretty obvious that 0-0 is better for United than 2-1.

Your last scenario is wrong.

United would have to win 1-0 or by a 2-goal margin (with a 2-1 win taking it to extra time and eventually pens.) Sevilla go through with any 1-goal defeat with higher than 2-1.
