How To Solve A Problem Like Morelos?

I saw an amazing stat last night that Morelos has had 18 shots at goal from within the 6 yard box....and only scored 4. That is actually impressive, I mean it is pretty much almost impossible to do. It is a 22% conversion against a standard average of between 60 - 70% from that area. I mean these are chances that any of us on this forum could score never mind Cummings or Miller or anyone else.

However, here is a thing. It is equally incredible that Morelos has managed to get 18 shots from the 6 yard box to date. For comparison the next striker to get the same quality of chance is Steven McLean and then Dembele who have had 8 and 7 from the same position.

If you put that in context, he plays up top himself and normally up against 2 centre backs tasked with marking him and watching him closely particularly in the box. It is incredibly difficult to not only somehow find space in that area but then to find yourself in the right place at the right time when the ball drops there is an instinct that I don't think you can teach. For context again, all those saying Cummings would have scored are correct, but ultimately it was Morelos and not Cummings who was in the right place at the right time and manages to do that so consistently.

We can look at it and draw a couple of conclusions. The first is the obvious one that he is horrific from those positions. The second is that those stats are almost impossible to maintain, which can only mean more goals.

By comparison, some might remember the debates we had on Windass 6 months ago when he had scored 1 goal in about 40 games for us and was missing chance after chance (the LC semi was particularly horrific). The various stats guys predicted his goals would go through the roof at any time as he was doing absolutely everything right and that bad luck couldn't continue. 6 months later they are right, it has just clicked.

It might also be worth speculating on why Morelos has such a poor record in such easy positions this season when he is so prolific elsewhere. The obvious answer is concentration or perhaps lack of composure - does he maybe get too excited and see the headlines as the goal gapes? The concentration part is maybe valid, he is a 21 year old kid who has after all played around 52 games in the last 12 months with only a one week break before Florida and plays up front himself every week knocking his pan in. Any player will tell you that when tiredness creeps in the mind and concentration are the first to go - after all it didn't happen in his first 2-3 months here.

Any thoughts - is it concentration, is it maybe the yips where like golfers on an easy put he thinks about it too much? Or maybe given the context does he have an Ian Black style coupon on? Or just gash from 6 yards?

Bluenose, good strikers only need a few minutes to make a difference.

Dare I say, Cummings has played close to an hour of football against ourselves and Hibs and didn't have 1 shot on target?

Add Aberdeen to that as well NNH. As I said earlier Cummings has 6 goals for us, 5 came when he was playing with a partner and 1 after a run and shot from outside the box.

He started against Fraserburgh and Partick up top himself and didn't get a shot on goal in either game. It is easy to say he would score the chance Morelos had but anyone would. The mark of the better strikers though is getting them, Cummings hasn't been able to do that for us so far on his own. Morelos does it at least 2 or 3 times a game.

Did Cummings play up top himself for Hibs?

Nope, played with the big lad last season can't remember his first name - Holt? Obviously Stokes the season before that and Farad as well the boy who scored against us in the 4-2 game at Ibrox.

Much like Boyd, good finisher and will score goals. A lot to add to his all round game though and when you look at his 6 goals for us (which is a good return to be fair since Jan) 5 have come when playing up top with a partner and only 1 without. Very telling for me, and why I wouldn't replace him for Morelos in this kind of game.

I'd be interested to see Cummings in the role that Windass is currently occupying in the side.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

i think he would do well but how can wee drop Windass ATM

i thought for a while that he needs to have a seat in the stands for a few weeks to get rid of his bad choice of pass he keeps making but as long as he keeps banging in the goals he can do his learning on the park as far as im concerned lol
but if his goals dry up Cummings would sit well in that position for me
