And it hasn’t been? This is not a dig at Pool here, this is a sincere question to any fan that may read this.
Has there been a particular trophy because of how your team have played or whatever reason, where you’ve thought your team were going to win it that season and ultimately did not?
3 times (more than any other) where I’ve thought we’re going to win this trophy and have not. Although on one occasion I think my 7 year old self can be forgiven
1985 – Milk Cup I genuinely got my hopes up, especially having been allowed to go to both quarter final replays on ‘school nights’ and overcoming “better" teams than Sunderland.
1992 – FA Cup, I was convinced the signing of Clive Allen and actually getting past the 4th round of the Cup for first time in over a decade, that we were going to get to Wembley and win it. Feckin Sunderland again
1999 - League we led the league for a fair amount of time that season. I genuinely couldn’t see how were not going to win the league. Then I think there was a period where we had no fit strikers and Poyet had his customary injury, and we dropped a couple of silly points.
I know our fans say it was the Leicester Match. I look more at a 1-0 loss at home to West Ham in a match we completely dominated. 2 draws against a United team in matches again we dominated. And then 2 stupid draws against Sheffield Weds and Boro.
When you've thought "this is our year"

2 stick out, CL 08 final defo, fancied us to win it as we'd been so close in previous years, just didn't happen and thought 2009 would be revenge before Overbo.
Dunno how we ended up trophyless in 08 came 2nd in like everything yet played so well under Grant surprisingly
Funnily enough imagine we all won the CL in the one year we didn't expect to win it in a million years

Chelsea deserved to win Champions League in 2004-2005 season and 2008-2009 season but were knocked out in the semis v Liverpool and Barcelona respectively in extremely controversial circumstances.

1999/00 (winning the Champions League)
Was 9 y/o at the time, only really started my fandom for Chelsea a couple of years before. Was something about the magic of watching United win it how they did the previous year + how well we'd been coming on as a team between 96-99, I was just convinced (like the naive child I was) that we'd win it.
We score three goals in 10 minutes against Barcelona in the Q/F and I'm like 'oh this is just destined to happen', and then Barcelona completely destroy us in the Nou Camp. The night I lost my football innocence

2006 Champions League.
Beating Madrid and Juventus over 2 legs, semi-final heroics from Lehmann with a makeshift defence throughout and then going 1-0 up in the final I thought everything had lined up perfectly for us.
Then the final 15 minutes happened

Never forget gudjohnsen blasting over the bar clean through on goal in the last few minutes at anfield. Carragher says it was a miracle they won that night, was the much better team. But it was their destiny that year.

Don't mean to be pedantic but providing Arsenal didn't score a late consolation even later, Belleti's goal would be the winner even if Barca scored another 10.
