CL too one sided?

This is a question asked every season in regards to group stages and last 16. One sided is not the best way to put it, perhaps the gap between the teams being too big is better but that isn't exactly accurate either.

Last 16 saw several teams dismantle the opposition in the first leg. The opposition on the end of the battering weren't given a chance at the start of the tie, so the gap in quality was obvious from get go. But in quarter finals, much tighter games were expected. Instead we got 3 out of the 4 ties pretty much done and dusted. The one tie I still think is alive is the City vs Liverpool due to City's quality and Liverpool's defence.

Bayern vs Seville wasn't a big margin victory for the Germans but 2 away goals are precious and they won't be beaten at their back yard.

So the question is, what is happening? Why are good teams suddenly getting hammered? City and Juve are the best teams in their leagues by some distance. Will this mean that the potential semi finalists of Liverpool, Barca, Madrid and Bayern will cook up the best semis in years, which in turn should lead to the most high quality CL final of all times (preferably Barca vs Madrid).

Side note: It'll be good for Liverpool to get into the semis, the atmosphere pre game and during the game last night was incredible. Madrid in the semis is probably going to the be the tie of the season, potentially.

All I can say is when are going to get winner from countries like Serbia, Sweden, Holland ever again?

It’s just because teams play attacking football.

When teams play tactical football you get low scoring, tight games, and it only takes one team to play tactical football to get that game.

When two teams play attacking football, sometimes one will get well beaten because the risks they take will get exposed.

It’s great, and makes for more entertaining games

Some ‘purists’ will prefer the Benitez v Mourinho type clashes we got in the mid 00’s. Games of few chances often settled by a set piece.

Me, I much prefer the full throttle football we get these days.

We won’t. They’ve rigged it to favour rich leagues. The days of a varied European cup are long gone. Capitalism at work.

Yeah, Liverpool's defence.
That was Liverpool's 6th clean sheet, in their last 7 Champions League games, but yeah, Liverpool's defence.

Totally agree. Barca vs Bayern in 2015 is one of the greatest matches I’ve ever seen in terms of technique and both teams playing to win. Don’t want to watch any of that Jose bus shiiiite

When has this happened before? Most years many of the ties are still hanging in the balance (in terms of score line) going into the second leg. It’s clearly an anomoly in European competition. Just four teams playing excellent this season in the competition and the opposition being poor.

t's no secret tha CL is biased towards the rich clubs, hence seeding so most groups are boringly predictable.

There's a contradiction here though - including 3rd or 4th placed teams means they also get the massive revenue as well, which let's face it, is the only realistic way to compete at the top. If you changed it to the winner's of each league only, the elite teams would just pull further and further away from the rest in their own leagues.

It's silly, because PSG are proving a bit of a test case for this - massive cash injections that should be unsustainable but for a owner more than happy to bear huge losses, but if they turn to an elite club it becomes a self-sustaining position.

i wouldn't want to see barca-madrid, it's been done over and over. two teams from the same country in the final is sh!t.
