On a day off work today and I’m sick of studying for financial advisor exams so decided to browse through twitter where I saw John Cross and GNev arguing about who is the best team of the PL era.
It started with an article about why Peps reign will ultimately be defined by the CL (which I agree with) to which Cross tweeted that City are the best team since Arsenals invincibles. Nev responded by saying that United 06-11 were better than both because they did it at home and in Europe.
This lead me to viewing the 03/04 table to which I was quite surprised to see Arsenal actually only won 26 league games that season.
Yes going unbeaten was a fair achievement and they had some great players but they did ride their luck to end up unbeaten.
To put it into perspective only Leicester and United 10/11 have won the title with less wins since Arsenal won it. To put it into more perspective if this highly criticized current United side win 4 from their last 6 league games they’ll equal the invincible win tally.
I know Arsenal fans will bite but personally I think that side was a tad overrated.
Maybe I’m being biased but I think United 07-09 are the greatest side in PL history. Back to back titles with some stellar title challenges as well as reaching two CL finals in a row.
Chelsea of 04-06 run them close. Again back to back titles and dominated the league for two years.
If City go out next season and win at a canter again they definitely become part of the argument.
Everyone has an opinion but for me the invincibles don’t come into that argument.
Were the invincibles overrated?

They got battered in all 3 meetings against Man Utd that season and that wasn't even a strong Man Utd side.

Some of the posts on this thread are dripping with bitterness.
They achieved something which no team has yet to equal.
Like it or not, this achievement will always be remembered and until it is equalled that Arsenal team will always be placed alongside and even above some famous teams of the past.

Barca may well go unbeaten this season, but they've had better teams than this one. The Arsenal 03/04 team achieved a fine feat, but imo there have been better teams.

OK, Hafi virus. Although that has never happened, nor is it likely to.
It's obvious you're just jealous of the 0. This is why you want to disparage it.
Mayweather is not the greatest boxer that ever lived. However he has the 0 and if he stays retired that is never going to go. For this reason he will always be in the discussion as to who is the greatest, Just like the Arsenal team. Utd just like every other team in the league had 2 chances to do it. They blew it.

Just to put the invincibles into perspective. SAF last title winning side won 25 out of first 30 league games while Man City won 26 out of first 30 league games. Arsenal invincibles won 26 league gamesNow if we didn't bottle end of SAF last 2 seasons we would have broken the points recordbut the incibles got the same points as our 08-09 side.
