Phil Jones

An unsung hero of yesterday. Played very well and kept Harry Kane utterly quiet. There was a moment when we were 1-0 down where Son (I think) put in a ball and Alli was about to score but Jones wrapped his foot around Alli (legally) and smashed the ball out of play to stop a certain goal. A moment imo that was as important as either of our goals.

The guy is a sicknote but when not injured has done well for us under Jose. I’ve lost faith he’ll ever be consistently injury free so potentially he may be gone within a couple of seasons but he’ll always be a ‘what could have been’ player. Definitely deserves some props for yesterday’s performance. If fit would start him in the final.

No denying he’s a quality player when fit.

I really do believe that fit and playing 50 games a season, Jones is top drawer. However he can't stay fit long enough to show just how good he is.

The worry for me is, our next best CB Bailly, seems a bit injury prone too, not a position where you want to be constantly rotating

Unfortunately Jones will never remain fit. Smalling is our most consistent defender and deserves a lot of praise. It’s a disgrace he’s not going to the World Cup.

Smalling and Jones are both donkeys though.
Two of the most clumsy pro footballers I've ever seen, apart from Heskey and they're always prone to a complete stinker

Similar to the Ledley king situation, when he can get on the pitch he rarely will let you down, just his body won’t hold up, much better than smalling imo, brave, determined and a pretty good reader of the game

Matic was awful, so were Valencia and Young.

This. I thought our two fullbacks per particularly bad (Young especially). Must upgrade.

I don’t think Young is as good at attacking as people think he is, how many of his crosses are genuinely threatening?

Shaw is a better defender than him, behind him in attacking, but he could at least improve on that.

Smalling was excellent yesterday and even Jones praised him for the tackle in injury time.

Unsung hero of the season for me

Any player that Fergie rated as highly as he rated Jones has got plenty of talent. He's also had plenty of bad luck.
