Emerson

So in his three starts in Alonso’s absence, what have we made of him? Who would you start vs Liverpool?

I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Emerson. It’s nice after 18+ months of seeing Marcos Alonso start near enough every game to have someone with pace who can get past a man and make quick runs to support the forwards. He’s managed two assists in four starts this season - the same amount Alonso has managed in 31 starts in the league. While Emerson hasn’t been outstanding, don’t get me wrong, I think he’s shown enough to start the next match for me. He impressed me defensively against Swansea, in particular how well he dealt aerially with some good balls into the far post, given he’s 5"9. I think he also has a bit about him on the ball, he’s shown multiple times already he’s capable at beating the press/playing out from the back. Little bursts of pace and good close control, seems to like to pass and move.

He’s promising for me because while not that young in age he’s inexperienced at the top level. His one season as a starter at Roma before his injury however had him as statistically at the same level as Alex Sandro. He has potential to grow and I think you can also tell that in his brief appearances with us. With more starts possible he’ll get bit more trust from team mates when he makes runs but also be more assertive in pinning back their full backs.

Although fully expect Alonso to come straight back into the line up looking forward to seeing more of Emerson next season, although hopefully he does start against Liverpool.

Alonso ain’t the problem, Moses is. It’s great we have someone challenging Alonso, but that does’nt make him better. Alonso gets goals takes great free kicks and has improved. So now we have two decent enough LWBs and two absolutely useless RWBe

In addition to what most of you have said already, Alonso is playing with one foot, while Emerson doesn't have that restriction.

Play him RWB then and Alonso LWB. Just keep Moses off the pitch.

I said four months ago Emerson should have his chance...& we've been here before on players not getting a chance time & time again...fackin drives me up the wall..

he's been very tidy, very busy & can cross a ball...more please

Is very worrying that it has to take a suspension or injury, no matter how the regulars are performing.

I'd prefer Emerson all day long, Alonso is a decent goal threat but his overall play isn't great.

Alonso shoots a lot but from open play doesn’t get any more goals than Moses since he’s joined us, free kicks is what is padding the goals up.

Actually amazing he's got the same amount in open play as moses considering he can't run, and the positions moses gets in.

But Alonso often goes centrally when we attack and shoots more than Moses.

If there are any serious buyers for Alonso I'd sell lets put it that way.

He looks decent, but he's no really a cut above Alonso's level so much as an alternative with flaws himself, which isn't necessarily what we needed for the position.

The question of our WB's being an issue might not be so prevalent next season if we have a new coach, but if we're playing three at the back next season it's still a problem on both sides. If we play with a back 4 going forward we're fine, Alonso & Emerson for LB, Azpl & Zappacosta for RB is perfectly acceptable
