CL - 2x 3rd runners up meet in final.

Congrats to both Liverpool and Real Madrid for reaching the final.

Should be a belter of a game, really looking forward to it.

But as both qualified by being the 3rd best team in their domestic leagues, its time to rename the CHAMPIONS league.

Big TV audience trophy?
Fk the wee UEFA leagues trophy?
Select nation trophy?

No doubt the football snobs will call me bitter, that the football ingrates will say I follow a pub team in a sunday league but that's the usual ignorance of the unimaginative.
CL delivers huge funds to the team's with already huge funds to ensure the advertiser's get the big TV audience, its biased against smaller UEFA leagues, no chance Ajax, Steau Bucharest, Celtic, Benfica, Feyenoord, Red Star Belgrade or even Porto will win it again when the financial clout and automatic places is/are weighed heavily in favour of maintaining 'elite' club's.

yes, I'm just jealously ranting that the game is rigged against smaller leagues, but only autobot would deny its removed a bit of the romance. Celtic (for example) domestic champions, have to play 3 rounds just to qualify for the CL group stage, stating at the end of July... ...whereas teams (up to 4th) who failed to win their domestic league get automatic qualification. Meaning they get huge cash to improve at the expense of the diddy leagues, its biased and unfair.

Rant over.

The coefficients are what drives those spots.

What you're missing Hec, is competition is healthy and makes a team stronger or at least give the impetus to be stronger.

The French league, is probably the most competitive in europe at the moment. Ok PSG have ran away with it this season but from 2nd down to 6th it's incredibly close.

If more leagues had this sense of competition the teams would be stronger and would perform better in Europe.

Remove the competitive element and teams don't have that extra drive anymore.

No it isn't. That was changed.

Since when? So how do they do it now?

The cement places to some leagues now. Were you not paying attention to Manfrom's pride and joy - the Coefficients Thread?

So England gets four spots, no matter how poorly they do in the coefficients, for example. When Manfrom was running the thread, Italy were catching England, probably not the case now as England did pretty well in Europe this season.

And yet come the group stage of the CL everyone criticises the CL for having substandard teams like last year's Russian, Portuguese, Slovenian and even scottish champions in this years competition.

So no matter what uefa do they will be upsetting someone. They cant win.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They should never have facked with the European cup. Have themselves to blame, greed.

The coefficients still play a part. If England drop to fifth in the coefficients then they will lose a place.

The Champions League - a competition to find the champions of Europe rather than a competition of champions.

If it were champions only it wouldn't increase the chances of a Red Star Belgrade or Viktoria Plzen winning it - it would massively increase the chances of the champions of Spain, Germany, England or Italy winning it.

It would also have a massive negative effect on those 'smaller' clubs, as money would quickly disappear from the competition, chances of big glamour ties would massively decrease causing a drop in attendances.

Would the prospect of getting Man City 20 years ago be considered a glamorous draw? Food for thought.

Btw, Real Madrid won La Liga last season, they didn't finish 3rd.
They also won the Champions League.
I think their place in this seasons competition is well deserved....
