Toby Alderweirield

Evening Standard is reporting today that we are confident of signing him for £40m from Spurs, and willing to offer him a contract into his mid 30's with a decent wage. This signing would be fantastic, but the risk is his injury record. Who's for it?

On his day he's as good as anyone in the world

....................

Is he? That doesn't say much about the quality of CB's in the world right now then.

I agree but then who immediately stands out other than him?

Ramos, Chillieni, Bonucci, Godin, Boateng, Thiago Silva etc.

He's definitely in that illustrious group when fit for me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bonucci is past it, Silva isn't what he was either.

Godin is as good as there is, but he much be 31/32 now?

We need a commanding defender who can pass the ball and at £40m we aren't getting better than Toby A, so much so I'd be surprised to see Levy sell for that.

We should go for van Dijk.

You couldn't afford him

We could, but it would be hard to justify the cost for a backup centre back.

I keep saying we don’t drastically need a centre half.
We conceded one more than City in the league, 8 fewer than Spurs and 10 fewer than Liverpool and Chelsea.

Lindelof still needs time to prove himself.
Smalling is more than capable despite having the odd blip.
Jones is quality when fit and has a consistent run in the side.
Bailly - see above.
Rojo is a decent option to have, tough tackler, much better at CB than LB.

We don’t need experience. Valencia, Young, Jones and Smalling have been here long enough.

We perhaps need a proper leader but Alderweireld doesn’t strike me as that sort of player.

What we do need is full backs who can get up and down and are as good offensively as defensively. E.g. players like Kyle Walker, Bellerin from a couple of years ago, Kimmich maybe, Marcelo etc.

We’ve lost any attacking threat from our full backs since Evra and Rafael left. Maybe Shaw can do it but needs to be given faith and the chance to show it

In all seriousness though, i wouldn't be against this signing. But i would prefer us to get in a couple of good fullbacks as more of a priority in the defence side of things. Fullbacks that can contribute effectively to attacks, can actually score a few goals too, oh and can defend somewhat too. Am i expecting too much here?

Totally agree about the need for more attacking full backs. But I'm not sure we can take our goals against column as evidence that our centre backs aren't an area that needs improving. That's as much a product of our general set-up and formation. We are far more conservative than our rivals. If we can upgrade on Smalling both as a defender and as a footballer, I'm all for it.
