I think the fundamental problem here is that there isn't a job available for him. What do we do? Sound him out and then, if he accepts, go to Macia and say "Thanks for everything but you're fired"?

Beyond whether or not he would be the right person in the right role technically, it would be a difficult thing to do without making a very bad name for yourself.
