Honest opinion on Willian?

Right, where do I begin with this one, has he repaid us? did we expect better? is this the end of the road? - Willian is a guy that divides opinion between with me and my cousin, he really thinks he is this amazing player who should be regularly starting for us and we don't need to upgrade on him. But honestly, should a club like Chelsea Football Club play Willian consistently and aim to compete for major honours?.

Don't get me wrong, I think he would be fine as a squad player but unfortunately, that is all he is at best and I would not mind if we part ways with him this summer for a decent fee. Yes, his work rate is second to none, but however, what else is a standout quality of his? Crossing? no. Passing? no. Dribbling? To an extent. Goals? HELL NO, 44 goals in 235 is totally unacceptable for a winger and for a club of our stature who should be competing with the big boys instead of meddling with Arsenal in Europa League.

- So guys, can you rate this article..
1 star = He should be sold
3 stars = He is a squad player at best
5 stars = He is brilliant, should be in the first team next season.

- Elaborate your points on why you think that

- I need to show this to my cousin about what some fans actually think as he really is doing my head in and he thinks everyone loves Willian like he is the dogs b*******.

He won’t get in our team

Decent player but seems to be a bit of jack of all trades and master of none.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oxlade gets in your team. It can't be that hard.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ox plays in a different position as you well know. Willian’s direct competition would be Salah and Mane.

Aside from that’s debate, Willian’s a player I really like. Works ridiculously hard, good technique, can receive the ball tight spaces and seems to link well with others. I do think he’s a contributor rather than dictator of play though. By that I mean if the team is playing well he’ll more than likely play well. If the team is struggling I’m not sure he’s the guy to set the tone for the game. I’m sure there are examples of this over the years but I mean consistently.

So personally I think Willian works with alongside other attacking talent. You’ve got Hazard who’s obviously top draw but the other attacking options tend to have been Morata (mixed bag) and the aging pair of Cesc and Pedro. For me Willian is the second best player of any four combinations - I think he needs to be your worst player in a attacking 4 to get the best out of him. If that makes sense!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His best attribute is box to box engine. I'd play him with N'Golo. Have your 3 in front and Ian Hazard floating.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Incredibly attacking. And at the age of 30 you’d be asking him to learn to play in a new position, further back than I’ve seen him before. Tough ask.

I’d happily take Willian at Liverpool. If I were a Chelsea fan I’d be far more interested in keeping Hazard and replacing Cesc and Morata than I would be ditching Willian.

Yeah attacking would be fun.

Cesc and El Nino 2 should be ditched. If someone wants to pay £100m+ for fatarse I'd take it.

Willian stays.

He is actually the opposite. When the team is playing well he hardly stands out and when the team goes through a rubbish couple of months he turns into our best player.

Agree with everyone saying he needs more goals and assists. That should also be aimed at Hazard and Morata/Costa. Our attackers just don’t score enough goals.

Fair enough, you see him a great deal more than I do. Just an observation based on what I’ve seen.

Yes, TLLL got it right - a couple of years ago when we finished 10th, for instance, Willian was our player of the year. He's incredibly consistent - but his biggest fault is that he doesn't often hit the heady heights he is capable of at his best. For a while a few seasons back he was scoring from every free kick he took - then that stopped happening altogether. Even recently he scored 3 or 4 goals in a 4-5 game span - and then it stopped. He covers so much ground that even when he's not doing anything spectacular he still contributes - but sometimes it just doesn't seem like quite enough.
I'm torn because he clearly has incredible ability - and has been mentioned above he rarely loses the ball. But often that great end product can be missing.
I too would love to see him in the central box-to-box role that others have suggested - I'm not sure why this has never been tried before. The only trouble I see here is that he doesn't have the upper body strength that is probably required for this physical position. But he'd still be a lot better than either Bakayoko or Fabregas in my opinion.
If he is sold this Summer it wouldn't be terrible timing. But I still wouldn't sell him to Man Utd - we keep helping our direct competitors in a way that they don't help us. It just seems stupid.

I'm with your cousin. I think he's an excellent player and I find it inexplicable why, once again, he's not playing while the hapless Fabregas and Bakayoko get picked.

Can't say I agree with that, in the infamous title defence season a few years ago he was the ONLY player who was trying to set any sort of tone!

I agree with you to an extent in that he is a squad player but not at best. He is a great squad player for alvthevreasons you mentioned puscoccasionaly he syscs blinder ad can score crucial goals.

Yes he has re-payed us in answer to your first question.

He may be a good, even great squad player for us but would be a starter for many other teams so I'd hstevtobfsce him again, like we did when he destroyed us for shakter donesk. He was everywhere that night.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Fair enough but he wouldn't start at City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs & United but cause Mourinho loves him, if we can somehow get United to agree to Willian plus cash for Martial then we would be laughing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Disagree, only club he wouldn't start for is City. On his day one of the best players in the premier, and this is more often than not. Doesn't have the flair of hazard but a cracking engine who breaks up play well and can often be found driving us forward

In a Chelsea season of total mediocrity I can only think of Kante or Willian, possibly Azpi too that can hold their head high. No coincidence those are the two players that picked up the club awards:
