Who is Unai Emery?

Lets go into details about the new man guiding the ship.

Personally, I do not know much about him or ever watched him team play, so I will be relying just on options but from what I hear he seem to be good (not the best) fit for Arsenal manager. He is still young and experienced who has ability to perform on the frame set by Arsenal, specially with youth and player development plus transfers. They all sound like BIG bonus for me for a club like Arsenal. I actually do not know what kind of football he plays etc..sounds more like a tactical player than a style flavour which can refreshing considering we were dying with the same 70 mins substitution with Wenger.

Arsenal have moved to appoint Unai Emery as the successor to Arsène Wenger. The club have conducted a thorough recruitment process as they look to replace Wenger – their manager of almost 22 years – who departed at the end of the season and Mikel Arteta had been considered as the favourite for the past week or so.

However, the signs on Monday were that Emery, the former Paris St-Germain and Sevilla manager, was set to be chosen. The club have spoken to him and a decision is expected to be confirmed later in the week.

Emery is a safer bet in terms of his experience and, in the end, it is this factor that has swayed the decision of Ivan Gazidis, the Arsenal chief executive, who has led the recruitment drive. Arteta, the former Arsenal player, who is now a member of Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City, has not yet managed a club whereas Emery has been in the business since 2005, when he cut his teeth at Lorca Deportiva in his native Spain.

The 46-year-old has gone on to take charge at Almería, Valencia, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and, most recently, PSG – clubs of mounting profile – and he has impressed Gazidis, even though he is not fluent in English.

Emery is happy to work within the management structure that Gazidis has put in place at the Emirates Stadium – in which there are prominent recruitment roles for Raúl Sanllehí and Sven Mislintat. He enjoyed eye-catching success at Sevilla, where he won three consecutive Europa Leagues, and he won the championship at PSG in this past season, although his relative failure in the Champions League, in the shape of a last-16 exit against Real Madrid, cost him his job. He has been replaced by Thomas Tuchel – the one-time Arsenal target.

Arteta had a meeting with the Arsenal hierarchy last week and he was confident that he would get the job. Guardiola had said he would not stand in Arteta’s way and talks had progressed to the point where the potential make-up of his backroom staff had been discussed.

Arteta ticked plenty of boxes for Gazidis, who was looking for somebody to represent the club’s values, including giving youth a chance, and play fast and attractive football.

Gazidis had made it clear he was not afraid to make a left-field appointment, noting on the day Wenger’s departure was confirmed that the Frenchman had not been “on many people’s radar screens" in 1996.

But Emery, too, ticked the boxes and, crucially, he came to look like less of a gamble. It is understood that Arteta was told his lack of experience came to count against him. Gazidis is not a man synonymous with risk-taking. After careful consideration, analysing each argument from every conceivable angle, he has come to see Emery as the outstanding selection.

The new manager is expected to have around £50m, plus money generated from sales, to spend on reshaping the squad, which is broadly in line with what Wenger was granted, annually, in recent seasons. It is not a lavish budget and it is clear that the new man’s coaching skills will have to be up to scratch from the outset.

A journeyman manager who spends an average of 2 years at a club.

I guess that's the standard practice in 2018.

To be fair he has been stepping up a level every time.

Read a few people saying PSG played a similar possession based wenger ball style to us before Emery took over. He turned them into a more intense side, based on pressing and winning the ball back higher up and countering, seems more flexible and studies opposition much more. That’s definitely something we can benefit from. He’ll also have the desire to prove himself as he’s still quite young. Looking forward to him breathing fresh life and ideas into this club, as well as kicking a few complacent players up the árśè.

With Allegri not being available, Emery is best option we realistically could have got. Not heard how he is defensively, hopefully he starts with sorting that mess out as a priority!

High intensity pressing game sounds perfect for EPL, couple of times when Arsenal have actually got their together and pressed and attacked well have been the only times Arsenal looked like a TOP team.

It will be refreshing to see a tactical, high intensity, pressing team, specially with he squad we have bar Ozil. We don’t have teams of Barca, City and the luxury to play the possession based footy anymore, so it sounds like right appointment at the right time.

Yeah, but hes joining Arsenal so will probably be offered a 20 year contract with no performance related get out clause for the club.

Whoever the manager is a £50m budget will barely get you one decent CB in this market.

He's going to need time to make a difference....you lot better be patient with him!

As a Spurs fan, this appointment is not too worrying.

Where do people get this £50m stuff from? Why would a club disclose what they have to spend to the media anyway, it doesn't make sense.

Distant relatives probably. He once told French reporters that his ancestors had left Britain and arrived in the Basque Country via France.

We've been bumbling along and still collected a number of Cups under Wenger's Montessori system.

Any new manager with a vaguely coherent set of tactics should have you lot looking down the road with some concern.

Experienced in three different leagues, having over achieved in Spain and France, don’t really give too much attention to the year in Russia. One of the most successful Europa managers of all time and has experience in champions league. Experience wise he ticks all the boxes.

As for the 50 million, you spread the transfer fee over the duration of the contract. If Sokratis costs 18,000,000 on a 5 year contract, that means we pay 3.6 million a year, not the whole sum up front. 50 million can still buy you quite a few players.

The more I hear about him the more happy I am.
He likes to improve players, make the team work hard in a disciplined way, he likes fast, counter attacking football but he is happy to change tactics based on the opponent. He works more by building a team than by buying in big names - with matching egos ! He is also said to really like Ramsey, which is excellent news. Ramsey has the passion and will to drive forwards and make things happen. This could be the making of him.
Talk of solid defending matched with swift counter attacks, with full backs bombing forwards sound like exciting times ahead - BUT, we are going to have to give him time! To sort out this squad - who have basically been left to their own devices for years - will take awhile. To get them to know their roles, to work as a team, and to bring in new faces wont happen overnight.
At Seville this worked, the players bought into it and they won three europas in three years. At psg the egos wanted to go back to slow tika take, and they still did the treble, but hopefully the Arsenal players will back him all the way.
Exciting times ahead, just give him a season or two.
