How Good was Leeds United Support in 17/18?

Leeds United's biggest home attendance of the season came against Bolton Wanderers in March, which saw a total of 35,377 people witness the 2-1 victory. The visit from Wanderers contributed to the second highest average home attendance in the division.

United's average Elland Road attendance in 2017/18 was 31,521, which left them just under 600 behind table toppers and play-off finalists Aston Villa who had the highest throughout the league.

Away from home though Leeds topped the charts on their travels. The Whites averaged an away following of 2,970 per game across the season, which works out at nearly 200 more than second placed Villa.

So... as it turns out Leeds United did, in fact, take more.

Here are the top 5 clubs for both home and away averages in the Championship season just gone:

Average home attendances:

1. Aston Villa - 32,097
2. Leeds United - 31,521
3. Wolverhampton Wanderers - 28,298
4. Sunderland - 27,635
5. Derby County - 27,175

Average away attendances:

1. Leeds United - 2,970
2. Aston Villa - 2,780
3. Wolves - 2,730
4. Sheffield Wednesday - 2,470
5. Middlesbrough - 2,190

Why Bolton in March, by that time a lot had given up on promotion and the play-offs, we had gone through a slump and let's face Bolton hardly a glamour team,
Was it one of the kids for a quid promos?
Need more of those to make ER more daunting for away teams.

Good point els, those Leeds kids can be intimidating. My 6 year old terrifies me.

Only 1 of the top 5 highest average attendances have got promoted. A bit embarrassing really. 1 went down and 1 had the form of a team that went down. Size of the club once again means little in this league. Brighton, Bournemouth, Watford, Huddersfield are recent examples.

Shaun - I agree. Add Burnley, Cardiff, Fulham and Derby to the list of medium size clubs that are doing well. They have invested sensibly, but more importantly, are well run clubs that have recruited good managers.

Leeds United is a big club with great and passionate supporters. Its support was good in 2017/2018 season in my view.

Support was brilliant in terms of fans coming through the turn styles, Leeds will always have that.

Support from 'supporters' though? hmm.. I do feel that we're too quick to scrutinize and point the finger though (me too to be fair lads)...

it wasn't so long ago we praised AR and the club for giving 4 year deals to some players... we all said 'great, we are sick of these short term deals, we need stability, we were top of league, Harrogates building stadiums, everything rosey....... then we lost form dramatically, all of a sudden those 4 year deals looked very bad... and all us fans were saying "oh no, we're lumbered with rubbish players, its AR's fault"

its one of those for me that he just got wrong in terms of the quality of players, he thought they were better than they were, to be fair so did we all too... so, clearly, its all AR's fault...

Just seems a bit unfair, not saying he's not got stuff wrong, he has, but his mistakes aren;t like he's tried to damage the club, I believe them to be honest mistakes (unlike Bates for example)

the whole badge thing, what a carve up. rubbish badge... but he did retract it after the fan reaction... he still gets grief about it now.

What puzzles me is what happened to Norwich's support. In the past they have always been a well supported club.

95% sold over the season. Best in the Championship I believe. Some of that will be affected by away fans too I imagine.

...and some of those players might yet prove to be good buys after a season of learning what the Championship is like.

Other than that I agree with your post.
