Worst attack on referee in Britain

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44241748

An attack on a referee at an amateur football match has been described as the "worse assault on a match official on British soil".

Sunday's incident occurred during a cup game organised by the Turkish Community Football Federation in north London.

The Federation says it is "shocked and disgusted" and "strongly condemns" the incident, which was filmed.

Police told BBC Sport they are investigating an alleged assault on a man in his late 20s.

I guess it's one way of people getting their kicks.

dont know why anyone chooses to be a referee at such a low level, you just get completely abused every week for like £30

Somebody has to do it otherwise there’s games on Sunday, they should think about having maybe 1 burley security guard at these types of games, only 1 guy but trust me I’ve been to enough of these types of games where these cowards who attack a helpless ref won’t go near him if some 6f6 guy is there making sure nothing happens to him

The Turkish football fans round east/north London are pretty mental TBF.

What an absolute disgrace. These people involved in this should be punished accordingly.

I saw the title of the article and thought I should comment on it. What has occurred has hardly surprised me at all.

I was registered with Essex FA from 1972-86 having passed the exam in February 1972 as the second youngest person ever (whoopy do you say) in the County. So long as it didn’t interfere with playing I was allowed to officiate.

In 1977 the Lord Lieutenant for the County, Sir Stuart Mallinson, described in the Essex Referees handbook his lament at the high percentage of referees who had left the London FA due to a massive increase in assaults on members. I personally didn’t encounter too many problems, fortunately, but I ran a line for an Essex Sunday Junior Cup match in 1981 at Canvey Island involving Peter Taylor’s side (Concord Rangers I think it may have been) and a team from Ilford. Some rabble turned up and one fellow in particular was on my case the whole of the first-half, constantly telling me to “stick that flag up”. In the end, I told him I would duly “stick that flag up” but somewhere much to his detriment. Of course, I reported it to the referee and there followed the usual “We’ll see you in the car park”. “Fine”, I replied, “I’ll be there”. Well, I was there to collect my car but where was he? 🤔 Long gone...

You are literally on your own in this business.

Good luck to the Reds in the CL Final, I wish them well just as I did Manchester United this very time of the month 50 years ago 👍

You don’t like Turks then?

Doesn't surprise me at all that this was perpetrated by two Turkish teams. Between them and the Russians/Ukranians, they've got to be the most anti-social and violent people on the planet. Scvm, the lot of them.
