Alderweireld open to staying at Spurs

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/06/12/toby-alderweireld-still-open-idea-staying-tottenham/amp/

Also reading today that:

- United are no longer interested in Rose
- United may well have been priced out of a move for Alderweireld and are moving onto other targets
- Sporting are losing half their players on cancelled contracts after a bunch of fans attacked the squad, and Spurs are interested in picking up Gelson Martins, Bas Dost and Bruno Fernandes on free transfers
- Rafinha Alcantara is looking like a genuine prospect, although rumours are circulating that Barca want a player+cash deal for Eriksen

Could all be booollocks, as always. At least the Telegraph link has a quote from Alderweireld himself.

It really would, I really didn't rate vert that highly until the last year and a half/2 years. Thought he was rash and very koscielny like. But looks to have really improved and been your best defender when i've seen you this year.

Vertonghen is a brilliant player, much better than Kos as I regularly used to tell deluded gooners (some of whom were rating Kos as one of the ten best PL era CB's for facks sake!). Verts has that ability to make clean tackles - he reads the game well and can make a tackle while not going to ground and ensuring he comes away with the ball. Also has strong leadership qualities, should be our captain IMO. Voted player of the year by our fans this season, quite rightly.

Totally agree Ace.

Apparently Toby has burnt a few bridges due to being badly advised, rumour has it he was all set to sign a new deal at around 130K a week, he verbally agreed to it before then going back on his word and asking for more money. Poch was batting for Toby and even helped convince Levy to offer the new contract. Then Tobys advisors asked for more, which will not have gone down well with Poch and so we have the situation as it is now. Levy will want top dollar for him, especially if United are not prepared to do a deal for Martial.

I've no idea if Toby can still have a future at Spurs, but hope so.

I think his agent needs a mighty kick in the nads. With good advice Toby would have been several million pounds richer given he's been stuck at £50k since his last contract was completed.

After his fantastic first season we should have given him a new contract then.

Verts has played him off the park in the last 18 months.

I would be amazed if theres a way back for Toby, especially after he wasn't selected for the Semi.

been the best defender in the league for 2 seasons

I'd argue azpilicueta for being an 8/10 in a poor team every week, getting a lot of assists and winning the pl. but each to his own.

Do you think that’s a good style of man management though?

What if it’s Eriksen who refuses to sign a contract put in front of him, will he be frozen out?

Don't think Eriksen is that sort of person.

As mentioned earlier, it is Toby's advisers who screwed up. He had agreed new terms with the club only to renege after advice from his agent etc.

Neither Levy nor Poch are the sort of people you break your word to

Just seen a reliable in-the-know person state that Jerome Boateng, Juan Bernat, Arturo Vidal and Thiago Alcantara are all available this summer for good offers.

Obviously Spurs won't go for any of them Bernat and Thiago would be brilliant, though I suspect wages would be a problem for all bar Bernat

Boateng sounds as though he’s up for a new challenge
Bernat has 1 year left on his deal, as does Vidal
Barca players want Thiago back and he’s receptive to that idea.

If Boateng were to leave then that surely opens the door for us to do a reasonably priced deal to sell Alderweireld to them, assuming that there is no U-turn?

Thiago would absolutely never happen, but it’s exactly that type of player we need in our midfield. None of this bulk and brawn stuff and definitely no bang average championship player.
