Until tonight it had felt very subdued to the point where any of the games could have been mistaken for friendlies. Thankfully we witnessed a classic.
Uruguay were especially underwhelming and will be interesting to see 1) how far they go as they didn't look great and 2) how they will fare next time without Suarez, Cavani and Godin amongst others.
Hopefully it kicks on from here but with 48 teams in 2026 I fear ithe World Cup will devolve into an international version of the Europa League. If Fifa were to do anything it would be to keep it at 32 teams or even reduce the numbers but money and all that...16 extra is just ludicrous.
