Let's be honest, Argentina looked a shambles and Messi played a big part in that despite being their best player today. It was probably the most selfish Messi performance I have seen.

There is no organisation to the Argentina system, with Mascherano & Biglia failing to dominate the midfield (it got better when Banega came on). Di Maria & Aguero didn't work, with them spending the majority of the game stood on each others toes with 3 or 4 Iceland players around them. The movement in the final third was atrocious. What a difference a player like Icardi would have made to this team if they didn't let politics get in the way.

Messi effectively played as an AM and while he did look dangerous when he had the ball, he dropped far too deep and left huge gaps between him and the front 3. He was also incredibly greedy today and failed to see that by drifting out right and cutting inside he would have seen far more joy than strolling around the middle of the field trying to be a hero.

The less said about Argentinas defence and keeper the better. They really need a shake up and if it doesn't happen immediately then I can see them struggling to make it out of their group. Such a shame with the players they have available.

On the flip side, this Messi performance and the Argentina performance is almost an exact repeat of Ronaldo & Portugal in the first game of Euro 2016 vs Iceland.
