Always worth a read Barney

This guy is the best writer in this country, and a good story there.

He's great at putting football in a social / cultural context and he writes well but I find him a bit lacking when he's reporting on football matches themselves - he tends to take received wisdom and then relies on his talent for writing to make it sound interesting.

I saw this article earlier today. A good read. The grandfather was exceptionally lucky: very few of the Germans taken prisoner at Stalingrad came back alive.
