Kyle Walker RCB

What are everyone's views on this?

I thought the game vs Tunisia showed the good & bad for Walker as a CB. Some of his passing, his speed on the counter attacks and interchange with Trippier was great - he also excelled at being the deepest defender providing cover for the other defenders when they wanted to roam. Yet the penalty he conceded highlighted that he is not a CB, no CB would ever face their own goal in a situation like that - he should have been side on no matter what his excuse was. Similarly there were a few other moments where you could tell the spacing between him and Stones was not natural.

Then on the other hand there is a question mark over Trippier, typically he excels vs teams that give him space like Tunisia did - struggling against better quality wingers/fullbacks (imagine him against Alba, only going to be one winner). Yet the international game seems to suit his style of play more, and its undeniable how creative he can be given time on the ball. Walker on the other hand was the best RB in the league the last two seasons and has the ability to pin opposition fullbacks and wingers back with his pace and fitness.

Personally I am happy to see Walker start RCB vs teams who are likely to sit back vs us - then against the better opposition (Brazil/Germany/Spain etc) let him go back to his best position with someone like Dier moving in at RCB to provide more defensive solidity.

Thoughts?

Having said that Trippier had an excellent game as a right back

..............

Pretty sure Trippier wasn't playing RB.

So what position was he playing then? He is a right back, playing as a right back, bombing up and down the line. He was playing in the position he plays for Spurs. Right back.

And you don`t have to throw insults. Shows you are another that has no idea what a football forum is about. Opinions.

Whoops on my part there. I had Wallker on the brain.

Trippier wasn't playing right back for England though.

Think it's a smart move by Southgate personally

I think he is wasted at RCB.

Primarily, I want my CB's to be able to defend properly.

Everything else is secondary for me

That's an outgrown notion in today's game. Ball playing defenders are vital to any team wanting to be successful, ofcourse they need to be good defenders too but if they aren't good on the ball as a team you will get pressed completely out of the game.

While I think Walker is our best wing back and a much better right wing back than central defender, I think he is probably our best player defensively apart from Gary Cahill. The other centre backs are woeful defensively. People wax lyrical about Stones and Maguire carrying the ball out but surely keeping the ball out of the net is their most important role. I feel Southgate is missing this point. One of them is surely enough because two of them misplacing passes and taking risks will cost us one day (as Stones did City last season). Walker's positioning in the box is dodgy but his pace is the guarantee Southgate is looking for.

A belated shout for Roberto Ayala on the list of not-tall but very good centre backs.
