Another missed opportunity for England. He had 30 mins today and offered nothing except for a huge reminder of why he’s third choice striker. Wonderful for Leicester, one of my fave Leicester players ever but he’s been terrible for England lately. I’d even have John Stones up there ahead of him right now....
Yes I know the game had changed when he came on but his movement is static, in fact he doesn’t even seem to make the runs anymore. His pressing from the front is non existent. He probably had about 4 touches, because he simply refuses to drop deep to get the ball if players aren’t willing to play the ball over the top. People will say it’s because no one passes to him. Players don’t pass to him because he doesn’t do what Kane does, make himself available in the final 3rd - or create space for himself.
It’s a massive shame because when he gets a chance he’s far better at putting the ball in the net than Sterling or Rashford. Yet he offers England nothing else at all. Does he need to, even at 31, work on his game a bit more? If I’m honest I can’t see him getting picked beyond this World Cup unless he actually does something when he gets his chance. I don’t expect to see him against Belgium either.
Vardy.....

Just because Vardy doesn’t fit in to Southgate’s style of play doesn’t make him a bad player.
Can we detach the two please?

You might have to say that again slowly .....
....... and stress every syllable

Finally someone other than Joby and Dunge who understands the article!!
Exactly this - no one is saying Vardy is bad. He’s terrific. But can he do more to adapt himself to England’s style of play? That’s my disappointment in him - but it doesn’t make him a bad player
In Nevs head, I’ve tracked Vardy and his family all the way to their posh mansion in rural Leicestershire and pisssed through the letterbox. After spraying mace in the eyes of each of his children

BS, he actually lives in Lincolnshire.
Whatever you may think of him,he hasnt had a chance to show what he can do, unlike Sterling who i wouldnt have in the squad let alone in the team.
How Rashford didnt start yesterday,is beyond me.
Vardy is not the future for England, but i think will still contribute in world cup.
Regardless of his international career he will alays be a Leicester legend, and should be treated as much.

And he did make it 9 Leicester players to play in the World Cup.

He’s not beyond criticism though Thorney. Just because he’s a Leicester legend it doesn’t mean we don’t want to see more from him in an England short.
I think some fans need to divorce the two and view Vardy as an England player - not a Leicester one when watching him.
It’s almost becoming sacrilege to question his overall play. Yet fine for some to lay into Mahrez on a regular basis?!

The Costa Rica game was the last pre world cup game, played days before the start of the world cup. So similar to the last 30 minutes yesterday, nobody was going to 'bust a gut' and risk getting injured and out of the wc squad.
As for Mahrez, I for one will never forget his time as a Leicester player. Unfortunately we are all aware that his time at the KP is done ( even if its gone very quiet on the Riyhad to go front )
Whatever, onwards and upwards with Leicester
………….. and England …………. hopefully

I am a big Vardy fan, in my opinion, any striker that can score 20 goals a season in a team not only playing poorly but now not playing to his strengths should command some respect. While I can see that he doesn't offer much to the England team while he is used as a direct replacement for Kane, isn't the idea that bringing him on during a match to replace Kane is to offer a different option and therefore the players around him should also be capable to react to that and adapt their game plan to utilise the talent that Vardy does Have? From what I've seen they continue to play as if Kane was on the pitch and therefore negate the substitution entirely and almost end up playing with 10 men. Until Alli learns to thread a pass through to Vardy we will only see Jamie flounder..... in my opinion anyway...

Great post. I do agree here that the players around vardy need to make more use of him when he is on the pitch.
I’m hoping he starts with Rashford against Belgium and shows what he can do
