Another legend gone

Before my time, but saddened to hear about the passing of Alan Gilzean.

Anyone got stories to share of seeing him play?

RIP Gillie

One of my favourite ever Spurs players, and created such a lethal partnership with Greavsie. I would often see him propping up the bar with others Spurs players on a Saturday night over at the Stag in Bush Hill Park. Never had any airs and graces. A thoroughly down to earth fella.

Ah yes, the "G men", Gilzean and Greaves. Such a Spurs type of player was Gillie, all flicks and touches, usually finding Greavsie, which then usually meant the next stop was back of the net. Gilzean was a beautiful header of the ball and scored plenty himself. Opposition coaches would often underestimate him which was a big mistake.
RIP Gillie the original for whom we sang "Born is the king of White Hart Lane"

Saw him many times and his ability with his head was amazing. I'll repeat the best header I've ever seen was 1970 December at WHL to draw us level against Man U after we went 0-2 behind. Many goalkeepers respected him, a REAL Spurs legend. RIP Alan and THANK YOU for playing for us giving us so many good memories. A ball would float cross and leave his head at three times the speed like the Kane header against Scotland.

Yes David. 1970 WHL v Liverpool which we won 1-0 but should have been 2-0 but for a brilliant reflex save from Ray Clemence from a Gilly flick. The ball came from the right and flicked off Gillie's head at high speed goal bound.. Clemence only had a second to see it but stopped it with both hands, Gillie's reaction was one of stunned amazement and the ooooooooh that went up reflected the atmosphere of the match at WHL

Sad news, RIP Gilly

So one of the G Men gone and the other one very frail as well.

Saw Gilly & Greavesy play together many times.

Whereas Jimmy was definitely the finest goalscorer I have ever seen in a Spurs or England shirt, Alan was without doubt the best header of the ball I have ever seen in all of my 68 years.

He could do power headers, subtle flick headers and seemed freeze in mid air with the ball stuck to his head whilst he decided where to put it.

Kane's 2nd goal in the Tunisia match reminded me of Gilzean, it was just a delicate and well placed header.

Spurs have had some great Scottish players and Alan Gilzean was right up there with the best RIP AG

Saw him a few times at the Lane. Such a graceful player, he and Greaves were deadly. Rightly entitled the King of White Hart Lane. Great memories

He still holds the records for Dundee FC's top scorer and most goals scored in one season. Before my time but he's still talked about as one of Scotland's best ever players more than 50 years later.
Sadly not capped often enough for the national team.
RIP Alan Gilzean

One of my memories of Gilly was a FA Cup tie v Burnley at WHL, We were 0-2 after 4 minutes and a Gilly hat-trick ensured we won 4-3.
RIP
