Big year for Foden

Given that last night showed that Alli and Lingard are not good enough to be an international midfield this season may give young Foden the chance to break into the full England set up if he continues to show the form he did last season for City. Likewise RLC wherever he ends up.and there will be others at other clubs who have a huge opportunity.

I suppose we have adapted to Pel and Mancini in terms of youth development (i.e none) so a couple getting game time (Diaz as well) is a big thing. I don't want City to b a 'buy only' club, but we all want to see the best players at our clubs so we are all a bit two faced at times.

Like Grated, I would like this to be a genuine multi club forum with wummery as an odd bit of amusing banter. It does seem to be the other way around at the moment, and most of the wummery isn't even funny.

Agreed, though it's a real bugbear of mine and I rant about Mourinho a lot for it!

Regarding the forum, I could have a good old rant about that as well! I think the issues stem from it largely becoming a closed community now.

So you have a situation where people think they know others and there's a lot of pre-judgement going on when people make comments.

Like above, it's just an innocent remark that turns into a silly argument - although didn't on this occasion because I didn't want to spoil the thread.

Juries certainly out for me with regards to Pep bringing young players through.
There were countless occasions when they could’ve come on for 20 mins or so

" I just hope that that isn't how we predominantly regard our youth set-up - as essentially a cash cow."

Unfortunately I think that's the underlying plan. Make the first team world beaters, then every kid on the planet will want to come, thereby creating a stream of young players that will never get to the first team but will be a lucrative income stream to support and develop not only the Manchester club but those affiliates around the globe.

One could argue that's crap since it takes us further away from the local community club or one could take the position that's it's beneficial because it's creating a wealth of good players for other clubs (Trippier, Mee, etc)

The business of football ain't what it used to be.

Hope you are wrong but suspect that you are right sadly. If every year 1 youngster makes it into the squad and 2 or 3 get sold to clubs further down the league and maybe a few more to lower league outfits I guess the club will view it as a success. For those who end up in the third and fourth tier I strongly believe that the club should not charge a fee. Big clubs have a duty to football, not just to themselves and without the likes of Bury, Rochdale etc the game will be poorer.

It is sad if that is the plan. It's the same with hearing anything other than a northern accent at the ground - I just don't like it, can't help it.

It’s also a problem with having such a top quality squad in that the ceiling for young players to break into is so much higher

I hope he gets more game time but I wouldn't be exposing him to the likes of Cardiff (and one or two of the existing PL teams who shall be nameless as their fans can be a bit sensitive but we know who we mean) who will try to kick him off the park going on last season's evidence. He needs some games where the game is close too, not just those that are done and dusted when he gets onto the pitch.

Cardiff were disgusting
Warnock just sent them out to kick the city players, hateful tosspot

Absolutely spot on. When the quality of the first team isn't so great, it is of course easier for youth team players to break into that first team, because the quality of the youth team player doesn't have to be so great either.

It's such an obvious point when you think about it that I'm surprised it's not mentioned more on forums like this.

Often in these kinds of discussions, United's class of 92 is mentioned. Like that's some kind of benchmark. It isn't. That is an anomaly. Totally deserving of praise. Totally worthy of mention. But unlikely to happen ever again.

Bombia, if one youngster makes it into the squad every year that in all honesty that is a great return. More than can be realistically expected. I would say more realistic is the club producing one youth graduate (to become a first team regular) every 2-3 years.
