I think it's fair to say that the best 4 teams in the tournament were the final 4. France had a very tough run in and were unbeaten and weren't ever behind in a game. Had bundles of luck, more so than England. Croatia won all 3 games in a tough group, knocked out the hosts on pens and played more minutes than any other side and still got to the final, played brilliant football. Belgium we're a joy to watch and we're unlucky to lose to France, probably played the best attacking football in the tournament. England, had bags of luck but still grabbed the opportunity with both hands, apart from 2 meaningless games against Belgium, they never came close to losing.
No other sides come close to these 4 Imo.

Well they finished 4th, so they are, how can you disprove it. It`s like saying a team that finishes 4th in the Prem isn`t the 4th best team in the Prem. It is what it is.

I think Brazil, Spain and Uruguay would have progressed as far as we got, had they had our draw. Uruguay even got more wins than us.
Fourth best in this tournament? Not for me.

The records will show England were the 4th bestnside in the World Cup.
They played 3 group winners - the competition's form teams - in their KO games, the same as the two finalists did.
The records will also show Harry Kane has the Golden Shoe.

IMO
a) germany will be absolutely kicking themselves. quite how they managed to mess this one up i do not know. They should have been in the easier half of draw and in the final.
b) france beat argentina (not great) brazil (decent) and belgium (very good) on the way to a very easy final for them. They fully deserve the trophy
c) modric deserves player of the tournament.
d) kane scored 6. 2 or 3 of which were vital to england winning their group games and qualfiying. the rest were bonus goals and he faded markedly as tournament went on.

Gotta disagree really.
England were massively improved, but finishing 4th is a reflection of an easy draw, nothing more.
Soon as we faced half decent teams our system was exposed, and our lack of creativity and composure.
We are hell of a lot better than we have been, but I wouldnt say we were better than a poor brazil team, and Ive even have been amazed if we had beaten the worst German team in some time.
Lets not get ahead of ourselves, as we always do in this country.
World cups are strange, its awesome with everyone getting patriotic but the standard of football and teams are way off club football.
Still cant wait for the next one though
