this is no modric bashing article as I think he's been an amazing player and was really good this tournament but was he really better than mbappe? did they just not want to hand over both awards to mbappe or something
looking back to 4years ago messi I don't think scored in the ko stages and won the award many thought as a token consolation prize to not lifting the trophy where instead a few german players could have been given the nod
going back the last player to win it for the winning team was romario 24years ago
strong cases to made for cannavaro and Ronaldo winning it in 2006/2002 which they never did despite being in the team that won the thing, instead the award was given to a player who's team runners up

Thought Hazard, Varanne, Trippier, Versalko, Perisic all performed better than Modric who did also have a decent tournament. Glad Mbappe didn't win it. Very unlikeable for a player that exciting

I personally thought perisic was bitter than modric for Croatia, scored a few goals always caused problems against whoever he faced, I haven't checked but how many goals/assists did modric have

Cant believe some are seemingly still under rating Modric, the way he plays and the job he does is very similar to that of Scholes, will receive the ball under pressure, play it simple, hit the 50 yarders, create chances and scores goals, so many if his little touches and body swerves go completely unnoticed, the man is a little genius, and has been brilliant this world cup.

Late-career Scholes who controlled the game the way Modric does was also not the most prolific goalscorer.
