On this day 54 years ago, one of

Spurs truely great players, John White, was killed. A player I considered to be in the top three or four of the greatest players I have seen play for Spurs, he was the brains behind the double side, whilst Dave Mackay was the muscle.

John you are still sadly missed all these years later, and your like will not in my opinion be seen again.

I remember him well. Great midfielder. I had just turned 10 at the time and couldn't understand how standing under a tree could kill you and to this day I think of his death when there's thunder and lightening. Thanks for posting this reminder.

In those days John White was known as an inside forward, not often agree with Sandy but he got it correct for once,a truly outstanding player.

John was known as The Ghost of White Hart Lane, because he seemed to appear out of nowhere, and was a truly great player. Jimmy Greaves said that if John had lived, he would have been one of the all time great players in World football.

Certainly one of the best footballers to wear the Lilywhite shirt of our beloved Spurs.

For you younger fans he was in my opinion better than Gascoigne and Eriksen and was truly top class. RIP

John White scored the first goal I ever saw at WHL, must have been around 1961/62 at home v Leicester. Scored in first 5 minutes but we lost 1-2

John White was a big player in Spurs great early European History, where he scored some fantastic goals in both the European Cup and the Cup Winners Cup.

He had not really even peaked when he was sadly killed. Never really know how much better he would have got, but while he was around, he was a major, major influence on the club, alongside Dave Mackay, Cliff Jones, Danny, etc.

Is that really how he died? That’s shocking

A tragic set of circumstances at age 27, as a double winner he will never be forgotten

As I understand it (and it’s not just what’s shown on the internet), John White prevented our Davie Gibson from earning more caps for Scotland, so he must have been superb.
