Our Defence

So read on Twitter last night that we haven't conceded a domestic goal at Anfield since February and since we signed big Virg no other player has kept as many clan sheets as the big Dutch ride.

Not too shabby for a team who can't defend and a (in some circles) overrated and over priced centre back

Certainly think the style of play helps this, the high press strangles teams forcing them to kick it long or in many cases we win the ball back high. Add Keita (what a player) and with more midfield options we can hopefully keep the high intensity style throughout the season with clever rotation and use of the squad.

Would have liked another centre back (being greedy I know) but Gomez had a good game yesterday albeit wasn't under much pressure.

Not a bad time to be a red

Still an impressive feat
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spurs didnt keep 1 clean sheet against West Ham last year, and the Ham team was noticeably worse.

Pool look solid and Spurs look a bit off the pace but its early days.

Any talk of Pools defence being bad by Spurs fans is comical when they conceded 2 more goals than the Spurs did.

Just biased nonsense like usual.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Their defence wasn't particularly good last season, neither was ours.

The point about West Ham is also so inaccurate.

IF we keep clean sheets vs Everton - for example - yet Liverpool can't that is more because of the rivalry than anything. Also WHU are a very bad team at the moment, and will be for the next few months.

3 months is a very impressive record though, as even the best defences typically slip up at least once.

I still hope Fabinho to come in to make us defensively stronger. There were times when they could pass the ball very easily.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

They're a Prem team with good ball players in midfield. There will always be times in the game where they can pass it easily. Fabinho won't stop that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I also think because of the style we play. Fabinho is more defensive switched on. He can read the play better than the other midfielders in blocking passing lines and space.

Gini, Hendo and Milner are more high energy players who are more about pressing.

I am glad we have bought the players to solve our weaknesses.

I mean we're bound to concede, as much as VVD / Alisson will make a mistake leading to a goal, these things happen.

But we've improved in our weakest area of the pitch, took a heap of cash and patience but so be it.

Although Liverpool have not conceded a goal at Anfield in domestic football since February, you have to look at the teams played.

Watford
Newcastle
Stoke
Bournemouth
Brighton
West Ham

Hardly a true test of your new defensive prowess is it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Isnt it? You let in 2 against these teams, so does that make your defense bad?

Own thing I've noticed is that you're very clever at fouling before an attack is forming too. Any sign of danger you break up the play before it turns into an attack, meaning it doesn't even warrant a card for the best part.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think this a little overplayed - anytime a team presses like Liverpool or City do, they are bound to commit fouls sooner than a team that sits back and invites team on - doesn't mean they are always doing it purposefully any more than other team.

Yeah I think that was the point of this article in fairness, not brow-beating, just acknowledging a surprising statistic

To not concede a home goal in 3 months is impressive, really my point is more around how VVD has come in and clearly improved us, we also went unbeaten at home last season.

It's the first time in a long time that I, and from what I can tell, plenty of other reds feel comfortable at the back, and the stats go to show us that the signing of VVD has improved us individually, and collectively as a unit we've improved.

Our defence is still used a lazy stick to beat us with and this goes to show that it is now a lazy pop.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not knocking that Liverpool have not let in a goal since February at home in domestic football, purely saying who the opposition has been. Most of the top teams would keep clean sheets at home against those teams.

Spurs kept four clean sheets against the same opposition at Wembley last season, and only conceded one goal against both Stoke and West Ham.

Not wumming here but even in the 2nd half of last season Liverpool’s defence did struggle with or without VVD when the chips were down.

Just think West Brom at home, Roma away and even the first half at OT.

VVD has obviously improved the side but I’m not sure Liverpool are rock solid just yet.

You're either wumming or just ignorant. You have to look at the overall picture, not 'incidents'. I call these incidents because of the nature of how the goals were conceded. Also, personal errors are not the fault of vvd, so it takes nothing away of how imperious he has been, despite not being at his best.

He also enjoyed the most clean sheets of any player, improved the players around him despite the lingering error-proneness and it's quite astounding how just one player can 'fix' a defense that was improving, but also struggling with personal performances. I don't think any EPL defender could have done the same job and have the same influence as vvd. It all comes down to his particular skillset and attributes that was perfectly matched to combat the frailties of Klopps playstyle.
