Why would he sign such a long contract when he has no idea who United may bring in as a possible new manager? What if the manager doesn’t see him as someone he wants either? Irrelevant of whether you want Jose or not, no chairman should be making these decisions against the manager and these issues will only exist when you have a chairman who sees no problem with this. That is of the rumours are even true.

Why would he sign a new long term contract? Because it guarantees him tens of millions of pounds and secures his future. So what if the new manager doesn't want him? He will have an improved contract for the next 5 years. If the new manager wants to sell him then he will sign for another club on at least the same wages as his new contract. He can't really lose and it protects against him getting a a career ending injury and missing out on a further 3 years wages.

Back on the OP, on the face of it this is further evidence that Mourinho's power at the club is draining rapidly.

However, on the principle that we don't know everything and often enough things we all think we know turn out to be rubbish, what if Mourinho is on board with Martial staying? That would imply that:
- Woodward isn't making football decisions on his own
- Martial hasn't been as disaffected as we thought
- Mourinho is happier with his squad than we thought
- Mourinho is involved in medium-term decisions (which is as close to long-term as you get in football management) and therefore enjoys a certain amount of trust and - horror of horrors - may be in a stronger position than we think.

As I say, that's not my immediate reaction to the story. But I don't think it's inconceivable. There are stories in the press this morning that Mourinho is either happy with it or Woodward is confident that he'll get on board with it.
