The World Cup was excellent progress, although i'm not convinced they are kicking on from it.

we beat the teams we should have beaten (that we'd normally draw to) and lost to half decent teams we met

If even 25% of the age group lads smashing the below tournaments make it, then there's a good chance of a decent future with the National team. Not sure Southgate would be the right man to get the best out of the likes of Foden, Sessegnon and Mount though, Eddie Howe would be ideal.

That said, the fact England rejected Ampadu at 14 because he doesn't take enough touches is rather damming.

Southgate did a fantastic job at the world cup. he took a limited squad and found a system and team that was solid and could win games by playing to their strengths and minimising their weaknesses. He did really well.
