Don, on the handball decision that brought about the penalty, there is a good photograph on the DROS which very clearly shows why the pen was awarded.

That was a very good analysis of the behaviour of the Walsall team and supporters, and the referee. Your sentence “They were not a bad side, but they and their fiery partisan followers were very ungracious losers” says it all.
On the whole the Rovers did very well to stay as calm as they did, but I think part of the reason to take off Malik Wilks was to make sure he did not get a red for blowing up! I agree Dobson was fairly lucky not to see red, and I think their manager should have got a straight red for what he did to Wilks.
The ref. did well to keep the game somewhat under control, but I agree he was too pernickety, and obviously likes throwing out yellow cards. I do not think Matty Blair deserved one for his “excessive celebration”, and I’m not sure why Niall Mason got his. Butler is certainly collecting them this season, but I’ve thought some of them did not deserve a yellow, and three or so years ago never would have got one. At least we have Tommy Anderson to replace him next Saturday.
Certainly I want supporters to be passionate, but this lot were way over the top in situations such as when Copps slipped in their penalty area, and the ref. over-reacted when later Copps bumped into someone.
Overall, I thought the ref. was slightly more lenient with Walsall transgressions, possibly because of the angry crowd.
When one takes everything into account, that was a very mature and excellent performance by the Rovers. As Copps said, I think there is something special developing with this team. Let us hope they do not blow it on Saturday! We should get our best crowd of locals this season.
