Bellerin - what the f**k is he doing ?

When Bellerin first arrived I was really impressed - I thought he was going to gradually improve and be special - he has great pace and can hurt the opposition going forwards occasionally, but defensively he has actually got WORSE over time. He's got no idea, all he seems to worry about is his hair and fashion !

Note in the clip in which Newcastle score below that he is miiiiles too far forward - and then makes almost no effort to get back as Newcastle attack down their right - 2 Newcastle players get into the box where he should be and he is nowhere to be seen, even our midfield has got back further than him when the ball comes over !

Overall in the second half we got better and the win was important, but the warning signs with Bellerin have been there for a while. We need to give Stephan Lichsteiner a go, he did well as a make-shift left back and given Bellerin's lack of discipline and effort he deserves an opportunity.

AFTV ? I don't watch it - Bellerin is quite good going forwards as a full back but is very poor defensively - which is ultimately his primary role.
What is hard to understand about that ?

"I would blame the CMs moreso than anyone."

Bellerin DOESN'T run back, and he's the quickest player on our team, whichever way you want to look at it that's unacceptable for a full back...

Even if he did run back, he would still be 2 v 1 against the two players the midfielders had at the start of the move. Bellerin was with his man - he had to push higher as we did not have a right midfielder. The midfielders have to drop in.

Well I don't agree, if we play without a right back we are going to let a stack full of goals in at the back post when the ball is swung in from the right.

They almost scored three minutes earlier with a header that was luckily straight at Cech that he tipped over the bar - either side of him and it's in - and that was AGAIN Bellerin out of position, coming like a tail-end-charlie after the ball has been headed and pushed over...

Here's the link where Newcastle almost score - if you look carefully you can see early on that Mustafi indicates to Bellerin to cover the Newcastle player behind him - but he doesn't do it...

Again, he has two players. Joselu is the CF - Mustafi needs to take him. Bellerin has a player coming from deeper to take care of (he actually fell over). Why is Mustafi passing his man off to someone else?

One player in the box and one running in from our right - and Mustafi is passing the striker off? Again, though, there are 2 midfielders behind our 2. The one running in is Torreiras, but he passes him to Bellerin.

Not saying Bellerin is blameless, btw. But it is a far bigger team issue than an individual one.
In both clips, the midfield pair both let runners go. Mustafi and Sokratis are in okay positions, but in the non-goal Mustafi has to mark the striker to the end.
Also there is no right sided cover from the right sided attacker.

That is 3 players who should be helping Bellerin and none are there. Quite a lot for one player to cover.

We have the same issue many times on the other side as well.

Hopefully we will develop into a 3 man midfield and our full backs will get the correct cover this style needs.

Bellerin is garbage, but the goal was not his fault.

I don't rate Bellerin particularly highly, but I do feel a bit sorry for him. He has nobody to work/combine with on that right hand side when Mkhitaryan isn't starting. We're desperate for a good winger on that right hand side.
