Forgotten heroes

which is not exactly right, as they certainly won't be forgotten in their home town. A few more memories of past players, few facts, impressions really, and as always, some mistakes.
I will begin with us, Pancho Pearson, a striker we had in the 70s, signed I think from Hull ( Gateway to Europe the sign used to say, I always thought of it as Welcome to Hull, now feck off). He was a top player and even if we couldn't win the title he got us to cup finals, he made a good partnership with Jimmy Greenhof.

Aston Villa won the European cup in the early 1980s, yes it's true younger readers, they knocked Pool of the perch before us, won the title and the year after won the European cup beating Bayern in the final. I don't remember too many of their players, but I remember Peter Withe, and the captain Denis Mortimer. As a player he was Robbo lite, but as a captain he was great.

Kevin Beattie, played under Bobby Robson. To howls of outrage I will say he seemed as good as Duncan Edwards to me. Sorry everyone.

Charlie Hurley, Sunderland centre half. A legend for them, I only saw him twice because theu were second division, but we drew them in the cup, drew up there and just squeaked past them at home. He was immense.

Malcom McDonlad, Newcastle and Arsenal. Big, fast, scared all the centre halfs, Scored a bucket load of goals, got injured, like Beattie, so never quite had the career he should have.

Off for coffee now. I saw my first house for sale recently, I paid 2,750 in 1967; It was £178,000 which means it's gone up by 64 times it's original price. Soon after I bought a Fiat 128 ,car of the year I will have you know, it cost £900, now a similar would be £9-10,000, so about 10 or 11 times its original price. No wonder young people cannot buy houses, it's a scandal.

Re Duncan Edwards. Yes I watched him, but Munich happened before I was a teenager, so I am not the best judge, plus my heroes were Tommy Taylor and Eddie Coleman. But I do remember Duncan pretty well, But to me it seemed Beattie was as good, only in a slightly different style. And for what it's worth I though Robbo was better, just as dynamic but scored more goals.
None of this is to disparage Duncan who was a great player, and would almost certainly gone on to have a wonderful career, it was a tragedy for him, his family and the club. But he didn't live long enough to show us what he could do. Other good players follow on and will continue to do so.

Many can’t. And it does not help car dealers now allowing them to hire expensive brand new cars for 300+ a month, meaning they have no chance of saving for a house.

........................

My dad would not have agreed. But having watched KB myself I can easily understand how a comparison can be made.

Everything that was written about Beatties assets are the same as what was written about Dunc.

Well that's a bit spooky

Stuart Pearson, Jimmy Greenhoff, Peter Withe, Dennis Mortimer and Malcolm McDonald are sh*tting themselves right now.

I was only a small kid in those days, but Beattie might be about the 8th or 10th name I'd mention from the Ipswich sides of the late 70s.

I understandably remember the mids and forwards better, but even among the defenders, Butcher and Mills are foremost in my mind, along with Paul Cooper in goal.

It's only. I understand, we tend to remember forwards, but reading his obit he was voted the clubs best player nearly every season, and the clubs best ever player. And I don't mean today.
