All these talk of the club lacking a football vision etc
If it is football vision we need, I personally don't think we need to look any further than scholesy. Unlike the others like neville/rio he is uncompromising about his vision for utd. Bring him in as DOF and have him supported by a strong chief scout that can help identify the the players we need. He will identify the managers that fit this vision aswell
This is what will work at utd.
Sadly, knowing the people in charge we will probably try to copy what worked at other clubs. Like we attempted and failed miserably with the galacticos, then mourinho etc. Next we will probably bring in some fancy foreign DOF who has no understanding or love for utd to try to replicate what he has done elsewhere at utd. Sadly, a replica will never be good as the original.

The trouble with Utd over the past few years is they've looked for a quick fix for SAF leaving. Instead of giving a manager time to implement their own "philosophy" they've looked for instant impact.
Liverpool (as much as I love this!), Man City and Tottenham all have one thing in common... a manager that has been given time and complete control of how the club, on the pitch, moves forward.
What you're currently going through reminds me of our fall from grace that we (I hope) look to have come back from.

Having a vision and implementing a vision are two very different things.

Ditto
Nobody understands the club better than SAF, yet he was the one who suggested Moyes.

Surely United's success was built on one man running the club.
Mourinho is similar to Ferguson in many ways, and yet he has joined a very different United to throne SAF left.
You should let him do what he wants, in the way he wants, and the Director of Football/Deal Maker should report to him, not the other way around.
Or you sack him, immediately.

Yes and No. It was built under SAF, but not on the principal of it being one man. Read SAF's comments in his book about his gratitude to his backroom staff.

'Steeped in the values of the club' would be under desirable rather than essential qualities if I were writing the job spec.
As others have pointed out, the exact role of the Dog differs from club to club but typically it involves operating in the transfer market: being on top of scouting data and running a scouting network, often negotiating with players and agents. It usually involves breaking down the broad strokes of a vision into a detailed strategy that impacts numerous areas of the club's operations. It requires strategic and analytical thinking, leadership and people skills. Why would we assume that a fine footballer who obviously really really cares but has zero experience in running a club or any sort of business possesses all of the necessary skills?
