Season 2018/2019
For Those Who Could Not Attend
Norwich - Wednesday, October 3rd 2018
Crowd 24,236
Referee - Geoff Eltringham
Team :-
Carson, Bogle, Keogh, Tomori,
Johnson
Bryson, Mount, Wilson
Bennett, Nugent,
Conditions. Pitch immaculate, damp and warmish.
After their failure to break down an obdurate Bolton with a 10 men behind the ball defence, Derby faced a totally different set of circumstances. Norwich proved to be a really good side who played adventurous, attacking football and they proved to be a very tough nut to crack. Norwich are a big, tough and fearless with many six footers in their defence and attack. They are confident anywhere on the pitch having won their last 4 games.
Derby started brightly enough but it didn’t last very long. Norwich soon had their measure and started to play a quick passing and off the ball movement that caused The Rams many problems and pretty much stifled Derby’s attacks before they began. Both sides had chances but both sides had an excellent goal-keeper and a solid defence. Nugent had a great diagonal shot just saved and Carson at the other end made a couple of important saves as well. They went in at 0-0 at the break and if anything Frank was the more relieved at that scoreline.
Because of my personal frustration at Derby’s inability to get control, I started to believe we were being outplayed. But on cooller reflection - these sides were very evenly matched with each team’s defence well in control. That is, until the Canaries had a corner from their left which was perfectly flighted for Klose, using great strength and determination forced the ball past Carson. I really don’t see what anyone could have done to prevent the goal. For the rest of the game my frustration grew until Frank took off a much below par Bennett replaced by Tom Lawrence. Then Wilson went off for Waghorn and a few minutes later - Nugent for Marriott. The intensity of Derby’s attack increased until from our left wing, Waghorn sent in a good cross and Bryson somehow bundled it across the line. Derby continued to threaten - now with more urgency. The game moved from end to end until the 5 minutes of added time was run down.
As for individual performances. Bennett was poor. Bogle was good and confident. Malone was an improvement on Forsyth until he faded for the last half hour. Wilson was off his game, as was Mount to a lesser degree, though he never stopped trying and showed a few flashes of brilliance. Perhaps both players were bit lightweight for Norwich’s huge defence. Bryson was busy and a thorn in their side and his goal was worth diamonds however he got it over the line. It stopped Norwich from being 4 points above us as well as just keeping us in touch with leaders. Keogh and Tomori were also good against a very rough attack. The ref let many things go that others would have called up. The goal comes to mind and cruel treatment of Wilson and Mount - no doubt done to order.
Things all felt better when Forest - 2-0 up - lost their floodlights and then 2 goals.
But I think the next starting !X will be a bit different. Malone to keep his place and Waggie to start and Lawrence instead of Bennett. I think 1-1 was probably a fair result despite how depressed I felt.
This is confirmed by the game statistics:-
Possession. Home 58%. Away. 42%
Shots Home 14 Away 14
Shots on Target. Home 6 Away 5
Corners. Home 7 Away. 8

Bennett didn't have a good game going forward, but he helped Bogle in defence. Ramdini, was Lawrence any better than Bennett when he came on? We ought to remember Lawrence cost £7 million and Bennett nothing.
My MOM was Tomori, I thought he was terrific. Keogh and Johnson did well.
I love ordering a bottle of Montepulciano d' Abruzzo, it just rolls off your tongue and it even tastes quite nice.

I agree - Tomori was my MOTM and there were other contenders. Malone played well except for the last 30 minutes. ran out of steam I suppose. Vidal has uttered words or wisdom on Bennett and Nugent which I agree with. VC 10 try ordering Vino Nobile de Montepulciano next time. Or just a good Primitivo. Best of luck in your present state of inebriation. If I read you correctly.

I'm not that bad Scouse, although I do like a drink. In fact Friday is my night out for a drink with my mates, so I'm off to get ready.
