Sure, the way we deploy them in Emery's formation, they're there to provide the width. But Bellerin or Monreal as creative threats aren't in the league of Robertson, or Trippier, or Alonso, or Mendy. Last season, every single starting fullback in the top 6 created more chances than Bellerin and Monreal, and several out of the top 6 (the likes of Cedric, Bertrand, Baines etc did too).

And what do the stats say this season?

So, Ozil missed today's game with a "back spasm", another weird injury to add to his numerous absences with illness. Might seem snide and harsh, but I expected a lot from the guy this season, and he's not delivering the goods at all. And all for over £15m to £18m a year in wages (depending on which source you believe). We should sue for fraud.

Against the top fullbacks in the league, they are demonstrably inferior in their creative output. Both Bellerin and Monreal have created just 4 chances/key passes this season. Most of the top fullbacks are well in double figures. Look at Bellerin's assist today. That was all Aubameyang that added gloss to a simple pass. How many times do you see Bellerin whip in the kind of crosses that Trippier or Robertson or Mendy do?

Lol what are you on about, Robertson is the only full back in double figures

Bellerin/Nacho’s starts are no worse than the likes of Walker, Azpi, TAA, etc when it comes to the attacking side

You’ll also see that Robertson hasn’t had a single shot this season because he’s instructed to stay out wide at all stages when Bellerin and Nacho come inside a lot more to get shots off like Bellerin’s today for example

Sorry Trippier is in double figures too. But he can’t defend for shiiiit

Robertson and Trippier also take dead balls.

Mendy would be well in double figures if he hadn't played half Bellerin's games. My point was in the system you're suggesting, our fullbacks have to be a lot more creative than they are, seeing as much of the service to the front would come from them. TAA or Walker can afford to be more conservative considering the wealth of attacking options their teams have. Bellerin can't cross. Monreal is a decent crosser but doesn't have Bellerin's legs to stretch the opposition. Our fullbacks don't do enough going forward, which is why I believe such a system wouldn't get the best of our forwards in providing them service.

Nacho may not be the long term solution but so far this season he has done ok. Same with Bellerin.

They are the only players that provide genuine width to the team which is why I suggest a few weeks ago we go with the diamond, because our wide attackers players don’t actually play wide in the first place

I can’t see him changing the current system on the back of that performance anyway but it’s a shame we will never get our 2 strikers up front together any time soon. Auba is a killer in front of goal but Lacazette works hard and offers so much more to our build up in attacks.

City and Liverpool's fullbacks also have some of the best wingers in the league in front of them
