Always loved the game. Proper gents game with so many great elements that make it different to typical gambling sports.
However, most people 30 and younger dont even know how to play let alone where or when.
On top of this, the pro's game has become all about maths rather than character which is fairly off-putting.
Shame.
Is poker dying?

A couple of years ago, every other advert on TV was about match play poker. It just ran its course that's all, after all, it is just a card game. Football betting has well and truly taken over

I think it's a bit more than a card game. That's like saying chess is just a board game, or that football is just a ball game.

I like watching it tbh - the 1 hour highlights rather than z live broadcast (do they do these?).
Always interesting to see players win when the odds are very much against them. Seeing someone with a hand that has a 0% win chance take the pot is good fun. Equally watching someone who thinks they have it won only to be beaten on the river
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Those are the hardest defeats to take sometimes. Especially when you're betting high to flush out the weaker hands but someone continues to call and hits their hand on the river.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Was done all in on the river with a straight to queen recently.
Been done with trip aces too, bad times.

Several years back I was at a tournament in Cardiff that I won a seat at by winning then making the final table at two tournaments at the casino in MCR. First hand on day one of the tournament on the table across from us a guy gets eliminated quad queens vs a royal flush. Scenes.
I spent half of day two sitting on the same table as Bepe from Eastenders before I got knocked out on the third day

We were playing at my mates house and the lad next to me Ben had a straight flush up to king, one card away from a royal flush, the odds on getting one 1 in 649,740.
I’m pants at poker but love playing it.
The real shark in our group is this business physiologist called Ameet, he’s got witchcraft or a computer for a brain, he reads the game and betting so well.

Pokers far from dead its just Macau has become the card mecca, and Vegas has suffered massively.
Also the media it got meant loads of casuals or fish played or tried playing, and most went broke realising math and bank roll management wins long term.
Fish either went broke or got good.
I played semi pro oine for a few years 24-30 tables at a time and
A) when its serious and a job its anything but fun
B) Lack of fish means you spend half your time battling 15 yr old rainman like interweb wizzards or playing regulars....so variance determines where the money goes.
Sad but game got so hard for most its barely worth the effory tbh these new kids are so good and most have played more hands online before they are 21 than 99% of pros have played in a lifetime.
Good to watch for sure but the soft easy games of a few years back are long gone

Sadly, this is what I mean. I've recently taken up play hip poker online as it's a completely different game. Once you get that into your head, you can have a lot of fun with it. You just can't make any money, unfortunately.

Been playing since I was a wee lad and still have a friendly "chump change" game every month, but no one loses more than a ten, it's more about sorting each other out, like a shrink session I reckon. My kids and their friends are strictly hold 'em but I like old fashioned draw and don't mind wild card games, as long as it's about fun. But with the family unit disintegrating, kids don't play cards with their folks anymore, and that's a damned tragedy. Anyone here remember playing strip poker and the obligatory conspiracy against the best looking girl at the party? And she'd never deliver the goods.
