If we want to have a go with over-representation, the Jewish population in the UK is about 0.4%. Yet Jews make up 3.2% (21/650) of the House of Commons and 8.5% (67/792) of the House of Lords.
To contrast, Muslims are 5.1% of the UK population but make up only 2.3% of parliament (15/650) and 1.3% (10/792) of the House of Lords.

So Jews are over-represented by 8 times in HoC and over 20 times in HoL. Do you see that as an issue? If not, why is it different to the rates men/women are represented?
It's not so much a serious point, it's just that when someone says "Men are over-represented in parliament", if you replace the word "men" so it reads "Jews are over-represented in parliament", you start to look a bit... Hitlery.
Not a fan of quotas - give everyone an equal opportunity then pick the best person for the job.

I'm not a fan of quotas either. And we shouldn't need to have them. I'm not actually convinced they do more good than harm in most cases.

We can (and we often do nowadays, because what else are maths graduates going to do?) split by demographic this way and that ad infinitum. And although it gets pretty tedious, it often leads to some interesting insights. But interesting and useful are two different things.

The salient question is: Is there a detriment to society or a segment of society resulting from the identified overrepresentation? And might this detriment be ameliorated or removed by working one way or another to redress the balance?

There might be an overrepresentation of brown-eyed people or United fans in the House of Commons, for example. Those clearly wouldn't be any kind of issue for society.

I'm more inclined to be concerned about an overrepresentation of men than I am about an overrepresentation of people of the Jewish faith.

I'm also more inclined to be concerned about an overrepresentation of people of faith than I am about an overrepresentation of brown-eyed people.

More men in big business positions but what about hairdressers, secretaries and cooks?!?

Sadly the metoo movement has also opened up the door to needy, social media loving shatbags to jump on the band wagon and I wouldn't be surprised if half the 'victims' are over dramatising situations they regret from years passed.

This isn't to say there are not victims but I just don't really understand this need for what is now becoming a witch hunt when all evidence is long long gone in 99.9% of cases.
