“Sky News also asked how many communications data application forms had been completed by officers working with the Football Co-ordination Unit in each of the last five years.

This is the form police must submit to check the text messages on someone's phone or see which websites they have visited.

Police Scotland also refused this request, saying: "It simply cannot be in the public interest for Police Scotland or any agency to confirm the existence of information relating to specific police tactics.""

Police attempting to use terrorism as an excuse for not publicising football related data is quite simply an absolute p¡ss take. I’d like to say I’m astonished that they’d treat tax paying, innocent football fans like hardened criminals but hey-ho, its the police.

Warrants for interception have to signed by the Home Secy or a Secy of State...it is not "a form the police submit " as was in the OP...it's full blown repost and submission which checked and balance to avoid abuse and fishing expeditions. Further, it'd take a lot more than 15 officers to deal with the work load .

And had Police Scotland released a statement like that, then maybe there wouldn't have been a story.

Still seems strange that they're trying to bury a FoI request into a specific police division by using a defence of "terrorism"

Are they suggesting that they think terrorists are rife among Scottish football fans?

If you believe that, you'll believe anything.

No law enforcement agency will admit to intercepts or methodology ...ever. There's nothing sinister in it...they will hide behind " it's not n the public interest ". Same goes for informants and under cover work.

Ah transparency.

Good to know it's as ancient as Latin these days.

Unless it jeopordises ongoing investigations then Police Scotland have no reason to block the release of previous figures. They said they can't release the figures from a specific division that investigates crimes based on the OBAF act.. due to terrorism.

That either suggests that they think terrorism is rife within Scottish football, or that they have something to hide.

The FoI request never asked who was being investigated.. merely how many wire taps had been submitted. That information should not be sensitive. It doesn't jeopardise any police investigation.

That information is freely available on HO websites eg number of successful applications made by each LEA.

The police often missuse their power. They think they are above the law.

How can they release the numbers without telling the owners of said numbers they’re being monitored?

Sometimes it is best the police keep some information away from idiotic journalists because aye right; they’re acting in the public interest eh?

My rse they are.
