The Robbie Neilson era started with a win in what was a very intriguing contest in Maryhill on Saturday.

All reports suggest United were terrific for the first hour, playing Thistle off the park with some tremendous football. The Terrors scored twice in that period, Aird with a fine finish and Safranko slotting home after McMullan's shot was palmed away, but if it wasn't for Bell in the Jags goal it could have been a lot more. By all accounts some of the football played was excellent as United lined up with a 4-4-1-1 formation, with McMullan in behind Safranko.

The last half hour saw Thistle rally and United had to dig deep to see it through, particularly after Quitongo pulled one back after some disappointing defending. Quitongo by the way is out of contract in January and, if he's fit enough, I would be quite happy to see make the move to Tannadice. But anyway, the lads saw the game out and it was very pleasing to see and gave us a much needed shot in the arm.

One swallow doesn't make summer (easy Pointy) but it's a promising start, not least because he's using simpler tactics. I've said before that if he can organise the team properly then we have the squad to do well. He'll be able to continue working on the training ground with them and we'll have a better idea where we are as a team when ICT come to Tannadice next weekend.

For the first time in a while I'm looking forward to a Dundee United game.

I would prefer not to if you don't mind. I don't think any of us would enjoy that.

Quitongo is a talent. Im a little surprised a Premiership team didn't take a punt on him.

Saw him score a belter for Morton vs Queen of the South at Palmerston last season.

Speaking of unpalatable shex things, i saw a clip at the weekend of a girl with a foot missing (i assume cut off rather than a birth defect but can't be sure) and she put her remaining stump up a chaps bottom while she diddled herself. She was literally knee deep. It did not look pleasant.

I think he's been plagued with injury issues. It's why Partick only gave him a deal until January.

If he gets a run of games I'd like United to take a chance on him. I think he's a good player and can win you games.

The highlights are quite interesting - the first goal was a genuinely good move by United. I think all of our goals so far this season have been due to opposition mistakes but this time we actually scored a good goal. There were even a few passes in the build-up!
