Sorry but top refs get paid well not like the old days when they appeared for peanuts, would expect a degree of professionalism, it's right they are held to account for poor displays and poor and corrupt ones need rooting out otherwise it brings the profession into disrepute.

I don't believe football referees below Prem level in England are making anything near to what many may think:

Referees at amateur level earn around £20 to £40 a match. Match officials for semi-professional games can earn around £80 a game plus expenses. Full-time Premier League officials can earn up to £70,000 a year, while all other league referees are paid around £300 to £500 a match.

Bear in mind that the fee of 300 - 500 is for his/her time virtually the whole day when one takes into account travel time, the need to arrive at the stadium well before kickoff and the time to leave afterwards.

Rate per hour is not what motivates these folks.

The cost/reward to the teams in our league is so high, that those per day fees are quite frankly a joke. I'd argue that at L1 level and above, the whistle-blowers need to be full time professionals and paid as such. Won't stop errors, they're human, but would help them focus more on matches.

To be honest where I work £70k isn't a particularly high salary, it's slightly above average nothing more.

It's a professional, well paid and extremely well funded sport in this country - refs need to be paid more for me, at all levels.

Thing is about VAR, its a great idea, but I don't like it in practice in football.. I honestly prefer it to human error, you win some you lose some sort of thing.

it works an absolute treat in cricket.. where the game is stop starty anyway where we're waiting for the bowler to get back to position.

In rugby league, hmm.. funny one... I find that the refs are over using it and its ruining the art of their judgement..

Refereeing in the Championship is pathetic, they deserve most of the stick they get

So all the people complaining about EFL bias and poor championship refereeing, should we get promoted would this stop? Would there be no complaining about bias against us because we are Leeds United.

My betting is that the goalposts would shift and that it would suddenly become the FA being out to get us and poor PL referees in comparison to European refs. Then if we get back into Europe it would be that UEFA is biased against us and European referees aren't as good as global refs etc etc

Maybe we should just move to Myanmar and play there, where I have no doubt we would be adored by the league body.

On the whole yes. Simpson had a shocker imho but on the whole I think they do ok. To offer balance where our players have fouled & ive thought “he’s in bother for that” & it’s been waved away - seen that loads of times.

Fans always remember decisions that go against them not for them.

I had a coach moan that all the decisions I made went against his team one half. I asked if that included the penalty I awarded in their favor!
