Lindelof

Third good game in a row. Getting to the point where he’s becoming the first defensive player on the team sheet. Had a lot of people raving about him before we signed him but had a Vidic-esque start to his career. He had a few good games last season but also some utterly dire ones. In the last 8 days he’s put together a very impressive run of form and is showing a very impressive reading of the game and an unpanicked passing out from the back under pressure. Surprisingly strong too.

I can’t see any way back for Jones or Rojo and Bailly is persona non grata. At least we have one we’ll performing CB right now just when we need him. Hopefully Smalling can step up after a stupid penalty challenge today.

Don’t really get why it’s such a big criticism that Lindelof was pulled out of position a few times in the first half with regard to his overall performance against Juve.

What was he meant to do, just leave Dybala unmarked? He was basically responsible for the score only being 1-0 with his vital blocks, interceptions, winning headers, especially those which put us back on the front foot and jockeying of their attackers when they broke on us in numbers, allowing us to get players back to snuff out their attacks. It was an impressive defensive performance.

I know you don’t like him, Shugs, but be little more objective. The much praised Bailly has never put a performance in that good for us, especially against the quality of team we played.

Second half i totally agree... Never put a foot wrong, already said elsewhere he'd a great half

First half dybala got behind him at least 4 times... Same movement every time. It wasn't until just before half time he got to grips with him

I don't mind praising somebody for playing well... Even if I don't rate him... But the first defensive name on the team sheet and lauding him as the answer after a few decent games following the mostly poor displays so far... Not for me

His best game for us was last season imo... Home to Brighton.

Maybe with a more dominant partner he could kick on... Could say that for all our cbs... Bar Jones probably due to lack of brains

But he's just not up to it imo... Don't mind being proved wrong should it happen... I don't rate him, but its not at Ashley Grimes level of hatred

Dybala’s one of the best players in the world. He got behind him and dragged him out of position a few times but in the main he dealt with him pretty well, and Ronaldo. I just don’t think you are being objective with him.

I agree with the rest of your post, which probably leads to your reaction when analysing his performance in response to Rob talking shiiiiiiit. Fairer to say he had a great game but has much to prove rather than trying to make out he was poor first half against Juve, which you did, when he quite clearly wasn’t.

I was only a kid back then... The age were you rate everyone and they're all ace... I couldn't stand Ashley Grimes tho

Remember us getting beaten at West ham and he got sent off for grabbing the ref after a penalty appeal ... Hated him

Thank god some people here can read the game. He was up against some of the world's best and held his own... yet the mindhive on the match thread can only see forced mistakes, not positioning, blocking etc

Even the likes of rio got pulled about by the best

He has done well the last three games. Hopefully. He doesn't come turn into a shrinking violet soon as he is playing a lump as he usually does.

The costly error aside, Smalling had another excellent game.

I’ll have to look up how many times he won the ball for us yesterday, but he was cutting out passes, winning it in the air, and nicking it from the toes of his player from behind him repeatedly, something he has become insanely good at.

Right now he’s (generally speaking) playing with such a cool head, with control, and using his strength so well.

If he and Lindelof maintain this kind of form, can further build this partnership, and can stay fit, we’ll have a much, much sturdier base for the midfield to build from.

Very pleased with the pair of them at the moment.
