Thoughts on Fred...

A decent display today. He's clearly got a very good engine and is full of running and working, however, at the moment, it's a little fruitless.

I notice he's quite good at getting near the opposition, but I'm yet to see him really getting in and then out again with the ball. For all his running and closing down, he's not yet making the tackles and interceptions you'd hope for. He looks off the pace at the moment.

On the ball he seems to turn himself into trouble on occasion and his passing can sometimes be a little aimless and loose, but he does like to bring the ball forward and look to play it forward as his first thought, which is a positive.

All of these things are hopefully just part of his adjustment to a new league, new country, new language, new tactics and a bit of match-rustiness having not played much recently.

But it was noticeable to me how much more effective Herrera was when he came on - he immediately made a few good interceptions and tackles and with all the same energy and tempo. I feel that Herrera needs to be given some time to find his rhythm (he usually takes about 3 games on the trot from my observations).

What were your thoughts on Fred?

I’d like to see a midfield trio of Fred, Herrera and Pogba.

I think this is the way to go. Herrera and Fred to do more of the leg work (with Fred also having an ability to carry the ball forward as well) and Pogba the more offensive minded of the trio. What they also would give us is a bit of tempo.

I'd always try and find room for Herrera in there though as I always think he actually gives a sh** when he's out there.

I agree with the sentiments expressed regarding a more dynamic midfield trio. Pogba, Herrera & Fred or Pogba, Herrera & Pereira would work for me.

I do like Matic as a player though, but his form has been quite mixed and I'd like to see us freshen things up in midfield.

I worry for those of you who can't see what Fred is capable of.

He had a really good game today.

I don't understand why Fred has been frozen out as much as he has so far this season

He's shown enough glimpses of what he could bring to the side for Jose to have given him more game time than what he's had up til now

Another aspect of Jose's baffling management this season

Roys

And yet Matic under performs every single game and still plays.

He was mostly crap again today.

The consensus across the board appears to be that he looks a promising player but needs more minutes and time to adapt. No one seems to be doubting his potential.

I thought he was decent today, with some moments where you can clearly see there's a player in there, and some moments where he looks a bit out of place at this stage. He's barely played and there's going to be a longer adjustment period for him.

Exactly VC

What is Jose seeing that everyone else isnt.
Both matic and lukaku have been consistently underperforming so far this season but have been up til today 1st names on the team sheet. Their involvement in the summer world cup alone should have been enough excuse for Jose to ease them into the season especially with the likes of Herrera Martial and Fred chomping at the bit

Didn't see yesterdays game, what did Fred do that caught the eye?

Would like to see him given more time to adjust to the league, because if that's what he needs, he won't do it by sitting on the bench.

There's been no benefit to Matic being in the side for a long time now. The defensive 'protection' isn't there, so you might as well have someone who can bring more to the table in other areas.

.............

He quickly closed down players forcing them into making a pass that led to mistakes from Everton.

He also made some quick passes into the stride of forward players. Some came off, some didn't. But he tried them none the less.

After Martial, Pogba and Lindelof, I would say he was our next best player.
