Truth Hurts

It's very sad to see such a horrendous failure from the pundits and commentators (albeit unsurprising from McManaman) to analyse the situation correctly. Rules are rules but they have to be interpreted and enforced in a logical way.

- Mane was in an offside position when the ball was played over the top, this gave him an unfair advantage to get to the rebound first, ahead of any Arsenal player.

- Making an approach for the ball after being in an offside position shortly beforehand means he has become 'active'. The entire thing occurred in a matter of seconds, it's too short to consider different phases of play at all.

One could argue that the offside position of Mane was interfering with Leno's decision making as well because he wasn't to know whether Firminho would shoot or square the ball.

Therefore, the referee and assistant should not be facing criticism because they actually got the decision spot on.

Oh, and Fabinho should have been sent off. His first bad foul was a certain yellow and he got away with that. After he finally got booked he was then let off from further punishment for another foul where he studded down on the bottom of one of our players ankles.

So count yourself lucky to get the draw Liverpool.

You still don't get it.

If you can't discuss a subject without insulting others than you are not welcome to discuss it with those who can.

Also, he doesn't need to be attempting to play the ball in an offside position - just changing his body direction/moving towards it is enough and he certainly did that from an initial starting position which was offside.

Agreed

As soon as Mane made a bee-line for the original pass he became active for me

City's first goal yesterday is open for debate. Sterling was clearly offside and the pass was clearly intended for him. It just never got there because a defender made a hash of his clearance.

Should that goal have stood? Did the defender do what he did because he knew Sterling was there or was he simply doing what he should have been doing, in anticipation that a City player might be there?

Same with the Chelsea opener. Ball crossed to an offside Morata. Defender has to deal with it, and cuts it out. Second ball to Morata, now onside but having benefited from being in an offside position because his marker has had to deal with the first cross, scores.

Haven't seen it but much the same principle

Personally, I think if a defender or a goalkeeper reacts to you being offside as a result of a pass being played in your direction the flag should go up.

Based on what you describe, I would consider Morata active in that scenario.

The pass was intended for him and his presence forced a defender to take action. That is a clear influence on the outcome.

Agreed.

Interfering with play is interfering with play. Currently they can just disallow a goal and arbitrarily say player x was interfering with play then allow a similar goal and say player x wasn't interfering.
