The offside rule is facked

Just watching the Chelsea game.

Pedro crosses the ball to Morata who is miles offside and the Palace defender cuts out the cross to stop it from getting to him. The only problem is that by cutting the cross out, the ball falls back to Pedro who has an easy pass to a now onside Morata for 1-0.

But for some reason the goal stands. Just because Morata doesn’t initially go for the ball, why is he not interfering with play? Should the Palace defender gamble on the linesman’s competence and let Morata get the ball with the hope he is flagged offside?

The same happens yesterday, Mane is offside and Mustafi has to step up but that gives Firmino a free run on goal. What is Mustafi meant to do here because if he tracks the run then he keeps Mane onside and is now on a 2 on 1 situation in his own box. How is Mane not interfering?

I know by the letter of the law both goals should stand but the law really needs to be changed. It gives a significant disadvantage to defenders and you now have attacking players purposely standing in offside positions to take advantage of this stupid rule.

oh my bad i misread the first one. we were fortunate cause by the rules its a goal but the rules are harsh.

Without even arguing your point on whether the goal should be disallowed. You claiming there was outrage for this is clearly not so since 2 fans can't even remember what you're talking about

I honestly don't remember that either. Cannot actually remember Liverpool playing Huddersfield.

I think it needs changed but for now the refs just need to be consistent with it

The problem is that it is almost impossible to be consistent with it. Even VAR probably won't give you that.

Its taken the happenings of yesterday's match for this to come to the forefront with some fans whereas it's always been a point of discussion for a while now.

Mane's goal should have stood as per the rules even though it really should be offside IMO.

The problem is not the rule in itself. Its always the English refs over complicating it. I remember Sam Allrdyce forcing all his strikers to stand on the goal line completely offside. Then forcing the defenders to have the first touch trying to clear it and obviously as a result his strikers would then be so called phase 2 and onside. The refs made a horlicks of it suggesting that was ok. Collina just looked at the English refs and laughed. Its fecking common sense that the strikers were gaining an advantage in phase 1 and all the continental refs called it rightly offside in phase 2. But the English refs .

Also, it can't ever be perfect but a reasonable level of consistency can be achieved with VAR IMO as opposed to controversy every match day.

Problem with VAR is they want the central referee doing all the reviewing when there could be a video ref?

A lot of decisions people are split on 50/50 even with VAR. Referees are no different they are asked to take action on what they deem or w.e so consistency can't really be expected on these decisions as like us fans and the pundits they will also be split on how they interpret things.
