What's going on with Pereira?

The lad had a great pre-season and started a few games early on in the season, due to injuries. I thought that overall he had done well and was hoping to see him continue to progress. However, it has been 7 weeks since he last played for the first team and nearly 12 weeks since he last started a game for us. I'm really disappointed for him. Especially considering the fact our CMs haven't played particularly well this season. What has he got to do to get a fair crack? I do wonder if Jose feels that he has to play Fred and Matic ahead of him because he has paid so much for them. I also wonder as to whether we actually needed Fred as well as Matic, considering we had Pereira waiting for his chance.

I had high hopes for Pereira this season, but at the moment it looks more likely that he will probably move on it the summer. He is 23 in January and I can't see him being happy with his role at the club as it is.

So he must not have impressed Jose in preseason, not that I think Jose’s words on preseason mean anything. And he is quite clearly lacking what Mourinho wants otherwise he’d play - whether it is experience, temprement, physicality, take your pick.

Issues with Rashford are more than just his position. The lack of coaching in attacking phases that most of the squad are sufffering from. Martial’s development has been questioned as well.

What would make Pereira any different seeing as he doesn’t even get games?
-----------------------------

If he didn't impress Jose in preseason, why would he then pick him ahead of Feallaini and McT against Leicester and then McT and Herrera against Brighton? Why would he come out and say that Pereria is ready to compete as a first team player? Why did he come out after the Leicester game and say that he had a phenomenal match, then only give him one more start? That doesn't make sense. Its not to do with the lads ability in my opinion, to do with the fact that Jose struggles to see beyond his desire for physical players.

Luckily I hold zero stock in your ill informed opinions,

Good for you. It goes to show how narrow minded and petty you are.

Had better match fitness and was probably trying to appease United fans that are desperate to see him in the side. He’s not been seen since so he can’t have been that impressed. And I made the point about physicality which you seemed to dismiss when comparing to Matic’s performances.

He’s best going out on loan in January. He quite clearly won’t get a look in under Mourinho. Hopefully he can impress away from Old Trafford and come next season we have a new manager that may have some time for him.

I didn't dismiss physicality, I said/meant that irrespective of the fact Matic is a more physical player, Pereira has played better in my opinion.

A loan deal might be best for him, but I do worry that he will then look for a permanent move. How much longer can he really wait for a chance?

Oh right, I see. Whether that’s true or not my argument is that Pereira quite clearly doesn’t have the attributes he’s looking for in a midfielder which is why he doesn’t play, and physicality is a big one of those.

He may well do. I don’t think it’d be the end of the world, but I’d feel sorry for him not really having been given a chance due to the management we have.

But even if we are going to bring in a new manager that plays a style of football where Periera would be useful I don’t think he’s at the level needed to be really important - it’s still an area we will need to buy in, despite spending an absolute fortune there.

It really is debatable that Matic is actually more physical than Pereira.

He never goes hiding, he’s always available and involved in the game, and he’s pretty dependable.

Don’t agree with this. Matic is often anonymous when teams are running through our midfield and getting into dangerous positions. This is my major gripe with him. I don’t mind having a solid, dependable midfielder who protects the defence, but he doesn’t do it often enough for me. Started off well for us but faded quickly.

I’m not sure you’re arguing this point, but in terms of working the ball out, he’s ever present and pretty reliable. In fact, if I’m not wrong, despite playing fewer games than several players due to his late arrival back, he has had more touches and passes than any of our other players so far this season.

Outside possession, when he’s played as a central six on his own, he’s been pretty decent cover most of the time. Not up to his standards of early and late last season, sure; but if you look at the goals we’ve conceded since he’s returned (and post-Spurs when he really wasn’t remotely fit and shouldn’t have been included), we’ve not conceded many goals as a result of being carved open on the counter or our defensive midfielders failing to track their runners or cover adequately. Primarily, we’ve had problems dealing with longer balls into space (bypassing the midfield) and from set pieces.

I agree that the physicality is likely the reason Pereria isn't getting much of a chance, but I just don't really see why to be honest. As VC has alluded to, Matic isn't particularly physical fora man of his size and doesn't have the mobility to get around the park and make tackles or interceptions anyway. Pereira is quicker and more tenacious than Matic.

Just had a quick look at their stats and Matic has make 6 interceptions in 690 minutes. Pereira has made the same number of interceptions in 156 minutes.

Matic - An interception every 115 minutes
Pereira - An interception every 27 minutes
Matic - A tackle every 69 minutes
Pereira - A tackle every 31 minutes

That doesn't make for pretty reading for Matic. When you consider that Pereria is a lot better on the ball than Matic and more able to transition from defence to attack, I really do feel that he needs to given a chance to cement a place in the team.

Sadly he won’t be given chance and even if he did he won’t cement his place in the team as Mourinho doesn’t like him. Needs to move away to start playing regular football.
