Ashley Young

Manchester United are in talks with right-back Ashley Young about a one-year contract extension.

Young, 33, is one of United's longest-serving players, having joined from Aston Villa for about £17m in 2011.

He has been captaining the side in the continuing absence of Antonio Valencia through injury, after Paul Pogba was removed as stand-in skipper by manager Jose Mourinho in September.

Young's existing deal is due to expire at the end of the season.

Negotiations are at an early stage, but he is keen to stay.

Young arrived at United as a wide attacking player but reverted to full-back - first under Louis van Gaal, then Mourinho.

He has made 214 appearances for the Red Devils, winning the Premier League and FA Cup.

Young has 39 England caps and started five games at the 2018 World Cup, including all three knockout matches.

Looks like we will be persisting with mediocrity in the full back position. Think we need to be more cut throat and ship out a lot of players at the end of the season.

He was crap and still got Luke Shaw booked after giving him the good old nutmeg.

I don't think Shaw was that bad really. Not great but didn't feel like we were troubled much down that flank.

Most of our issues came from Young. He was horrendous.

We need a left back and a right back if we want to progress on the pitch (and a new manager). I don’t mind Young covering either of these positions but the problem is that he plays so often.

Guardian now reporting Valencia been offered 1 year deal too.

Make this madness end. Please.

Didn’t Ferguson say Young would be the replacement for Giggs? Maybe he meant as a player who would stay with us until he was 50.

Depends what the long term plan is at full back. As long as we aren't depending on him as 1st choice full back I have no problem at all in keeping Young around.

Valencia needs to go though

Both of them need to go, end of story. This isn't negotiable. We need no move on from very ordinary.

I remember watching us lose 4-1 at City in Moyes' first season. I said after that game that Young and Valencia should never start as wingers in the same side again. One maybe, but not both.

Five years later and all we've done is move them about 30 yards further back down the pitch.

The whole team sets up 30 yards further back down the pitch from our Fergie days to be fair.
