So the England V USA match becomes even more farcical with the news the Delph will Captain the team.
How has he earned the accolade of being captain, he can’t even get into the City team.
Also he will hand the armband over to Rooney when he comes on to get a totally undeserved 120th cap, which in my book is about 40 caps more than he should have got.
He will also wear the number 10 shirt.
This is giving a cap to someone who a) has retired from international football. b) is a poor role model for kids by using prostitutes, drink driving conviction. c) has not won a thing with England.
What message does this send out to young players, who could have had a run out in a meaningless friendly instead of this blatant commercial entity.
Hailing him as England’s greatest goal scorer doesn’t wash either. Look at the number of games it took Rooney to score his 53 goals.
Lineker scored 48 in 80 games, Charlton took 108 game to score 49..........
Then we look at Greaves, totally different class to any of these.
Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 games, in the days when there were far fewer international matches and you were not awarded a cap easily, unlike today.
So to round it all off, I think that this a mistake by Southgate, one which I think someone in the FA has directed him to make
Delph Captain

Southgate is a mess, he lucked out at the World Cup with a kind draw.
Hope I'm wrong but he will get found out I'm the coming years

Delph is decent for England.
Also the players you'd typically have in your starting 11 are knackered and need a game off, hence this will be more of an experiential side. Would you rather have Delph captain and be a bit miffed or Kane captain and get a muscle injury?
Some friendlies are just that - a chance to do something different.
As for Rooney, stop taking everything so seriously. He had a good career, it's making some money for his charity, he says goodbye to international football in a no pressure game. It's just something nice.

I completely disagree with your statement on Delph.
At the end of the day it does not matter if he can't play for his club. What matters is if he delivers in the England shirt. If Southgate plays a system and the player fits into that system and performs then it does not matter at all if he is playing for his club.

He is not even a first choice for England though, is he?

It is the award of another cap which annoys me. It devalues playing for your country significantly.

using that he doesnt get in the City team is a bad example. but he isnt a regular for england and should no way be captain. is it his birthday or something?

Starting 11 has answered why delph is the cpt. Probably the only one who has done it at club level.

Ye he is a better player. Hasn't got experience in leading the team tho I dont think? Not sure on that, but delph seems the obvious choice in that 11.

He’s been a leader for Spurs. I’m not that fussed about Delph being captain, he is the senior player in the lineup, but I disagree with your reasoning.
