There’s a growing consensus that not only is Mourinho not really the manager to take us forward, but that larger systemic issues at the club also require resolving.
I can’t help but keep thinking that Southgate might be an astute managerial option. He’s a coach, he gives young players a chance, he’s doing good work with the England team and the players seem to really be responding to him, England are playing a tactically assured & adaptable brand of football that is also much easier on the eye than what we’re seeing with United...
Southgate seems like a smart chap, a long term planner and someone who gets people on his side. He’s done his time as a manager previously and seems to have grown into his current role quite admirably.
The only other viable options beyond Mourinho are Zidane & possibly Poch that I can think of.
Would Southgate represent something more in line with the direction the club should be taking? I think there’s a case to be made.
Moving forward: Gareth Southgate?

"Southgate does at least appear to be intelligent"
In what way? He looks tactically inept to me.
He's got pace and attacking quality in the team and England have some cracking players. He's not going to be a failure for England, but this will be the highlight of his career. He won't win anything.
"but Giggs is not the man for the job."
I never said he was either, but would take him over Southgate. Heck I'd rather keep Mourinho even if it meant bringing in Southgate would get rid of him.

Fair enough.
Southgate for the most part got it right tactically. He may have been criticised for subs choices, but he changed the formation quite radically, his set piece coaching was excellent and the way he broke the England penalty hoodoo was all down to his prep. He’s a smart enough coach. I see none of this in Giggs, but to be fair I feel neither is right for the job, only Southgate at least has experience, giggs has sentimentality and nowt else..

With all due respect to Gareth Southgate, top level club football is different to international level football.
Southgate is progressing admirably well in a world were we are not expecting anything other than entertainment and progression. The money involved in this side of the game is considerably much less, and is based more so on pride and passion.
At United, he would be somewhat out of his depth - due largely to the pressures of big club football syndrome, huge vast sums of money, and most importantly he wouldn't be afforded the time and patience if results fail him. Yes, i know he's managed at club level in his past, but the expectations were based more so on survival. His current style of football is 'easier' on the eye' than our current manager's but the lack of experience at the top level with all its expectations and aspirations may not match up well with a man like Southgate.
This is not to say that he wouldn't lose his job as England manager if England started going on a losing streak, but at the England camp they have a vision (something which our current board at the club seems to be lacking - on the field anyway). They are allowing Southgate to build on his methods and progress the England team for the future. We have a decent squad at present, but we are still lacking. And this England board knows this and is giving him time to build something special.

I was against Southgate as England manager... but he's truly win me around.... prefer watching England to utd.
Those slating him are clearly the type to make a decision and stick with it forever more.

Those taking about club football...
He is showing a tactical and stylistic understanding of football... that can easily be applied to club football (far easier, in fact)

...Until he plays against a more quality side.
But in his defence he does have less of an array of quality options to choose from - He simply can not go out and buy a world class player whenever the chance is available.
From his options he has managed to get a group of young attacking, entertaining players playing well. That is easier to watch than United.
But the thing is England has 'less to lose' than United does. And with the club being in a mess, i doubt the board want to take any more big risks.

I think the style of play under Southgate has been vastly overstated by a lot of England fans because of what came before it - though we didn’t struggle quite as much putting away teams in qualifying as much as under Southgate. But he’s done well with the limited squad he has. Let’s wait and see how we do at the next Euros.
And as I mentioned before I don’t think club management is even something he’s concerned about so it’s unlikely he’d even want the job. He’s in his dream job now and, surprisingly as an England manager, under relatively little pressure. He’s well paid too.
The United job by contrast doesn’t have as much appeal.

There hasn't been a British manager for a long time, and even longer an English one, that has desrved a crack at one of the big teams in the PL. Southgate certainly does deserve it. I wouldn't mind at all if he given a chance. As long as he comes in with the same mentality has he has done the England job, doesn't cower away like Moyes and plays some good football then he could be a success. If it's not United I hope one of the other ones give him a chance in the next 3-5 years.
