Jose's 1st Press Conference

Had a search back to find the content of it.

The 'horrendous' squad LvG had apparently left only needed four players of which 3 had already came in (Bailly, Ibra, Mhki). The 4th was a DM. We didn't sign the DM until Matic the following summer but in addition we did get Pogba who perhaps Jose saw as suitable for the deep lying role.

He brought out a list of youth players he gave debuts to as he knew the question was coming. He is now 2.5 years in so we can put his fable to rest. This is the full extent of his youth development at Utd (Out of 140 matches):

Demetri Mitchell - 1 start, 90 mins
Josh Harrop - 1 start, 90 mins, sold to Preston
Angel Gomes - 2 sub apps, 4 mins
Fosu-Mensah - 4 starts, 7 sub apps, 323 mins (404 under LvG)
J. Pereira - 1 Start, 2 sub apps, 112 mins
Tuanzebe - 5 starts, 3 sub apps, 435 mins
McTominay - 18 starts, 12 sub apps, 1648 mins
A. Pereira - 2 starts, 3 sub apps, 170 mins (428 under LvG)

He pre-empted a question about playing style with
"But you can’t win competitions by not playing well. What is playing well? To score more than your opponent; to make your fans proud because you win."

We reportedly have 8 defenders out on Wednesday. Surely now is the time promote one of the youth team CBs such as Williams. But no we will probably see an inexperienced cm playing at CB in McTominay who has been utterly tragic there

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Under LvG we finished up beating Arsenal away from home with a 3 man defence containing Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett.
We also beat them 3-2 at home with Carrick, Blind as our CB pairing and Varela at RB.

Proper inury crises and still came away with the result.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I remember those wins very well. I actually miss those days a little bit. Arsenal fan TV afterwads was the cherry on the cake.

He knew when he joined that he would be expected to deliver good football. He mentioned it himself. He has failed to do that.

Warning sign was f.[]cking blaring out with that statement. For him winning football is good football. So if you're not winning what exactly are you offering?

I don't think that we would be in any worse position with LVG or Moyes in charge. The football would likely be just as poor under Moyes and perhaps slightly better under LVG. He did at least have a plan of how he wanted the team to play and with a few more windows might have achieved his goal. I also doubt that he would have wasted £75m on Lukaku and think that our youth players would have had more playing time. We would probably be in a pretty decent position now in terms of our youngsters growing together and forming the nucleus of strong squad, with the likes of TFM, Pereira and Axel likely being in and around the team. Maybe a couple of others too.
---------------------

The problem with LVG's tenure here, wasn't so much LVG himself, it was more the plan around him. He was given a 3 year contract to implement a whole new style of play to a club at that point were not in great shape. LVG had made it clear that he was stepping away from football after his third season and then seemed likely Giggs would take over. Ultimately this is what did it for me with him. I couldn't see how we were going to make the progress needed in that one year after we had taken a step back already from his first season. For what it's worth I think LVG would have made a good DoF. He had a vision of how football should be played, the problem was implementing it.

LVG is DoF is something I have been thinking about a lot recently. I think that ship has sailed in terms of him retiring and the way it ended at United, but he would likely have fit that role well.

The reality is Jose went backwards after signing Ibra, Pogba and Mkhi.

Imagine what those three would have done to LVG's side who finished 4th and won the FA Cup?

People forget LVG's style may have been slow tempo, but we kept possession and with the addition of a goalscorer and creative player it could have been a successful side imo.

One thing I respected about LVG was that if the right player (in his eyes) wasn't available, he didn't sign one for the sake of it.

We all knew we needed a striker, LVG said so himself. The club could learn from this.

Good post.
A non-burgled Di Maria and Falcao not afraid of getting hurt again would have made a world of difference.

The arrogance of the board to ignore the Man City model is astounding. Set United back a decade.

Post this debacle they will start again and try to copy City. So embarrassing.

All I will say is this.

Gomez and Chong would have been given games in the League Cup or what ever it is now called, under SAF.
